It's taken me ages and lots of exploration to get a sense of character and some key tricks that I like and fit my style ... Wish I could have figured a lot of this stuff out earlier, but it doesn't work that way.
Short answer: pick effects that are appropriate for the style of magic and the character you want; pick tricks you like; pick tricks that are the strongest magic you can do; pick many tricks that have built in audience interaction; pick tricks that are easy to carry, pack small and play big; pick tricks that are generally wind-proof, angle proof, kid proof, hard to break, and don't require batteries; pick many tricks that can be done standing, in the hands, without needing a table; pick tricks from a variety of styles, props, duration, and effect; pick tricks that segue into each other easily and appropriately; pick tricks which are classic and not subject to the whims of fashion. Then boil it all down to 5-12 tricks/mini-routines. Explore their history, script carefully, practice and rehearse like mad, then do them as many times as possible for as many people as possible. |

I agree you have to find the effects you want to perform. I personally like the Chicago surprise myself. Check it out and see what you think

I like the music analogy
My chosen instrument is harmonica When I started I liked the fast wailing songs These days I can appreciate slower sweet melodies. Same can be said for the choices of effects and pace of my show Coins were my prop of choice. I went from Bobo to knuckle buckling stuff. To my audience it doesn't matter if it's scotch and soda or Kam, McClintock ... Some of my friends say the later takes too much efforts I just smile.
