"Small Hands Syndrome," I guess. Marry a woman with small hands, my father always said. I have no idea what he really meant-- must be sewing skill related?
Harry, many magicians are intimidated by the notion of palming a card, but you obviously are not-- yet, you've never bragged of having "Cro-Magnon Mitts." What tips can you give to those who are worried about or having fits about their mitts? |

Randy: I always get a kick out of it when a magician who doesn't know me and who has read one of my effects whee a palm off is involved writes to say something like, "Sure, you can do it; I can't because I have small hands." Of course I always write back and tell them that the odds are that my hands are smaller than his. They usually are. My hands are much smaller than most card guys. In this case, I don't think size is important. I think proper timing, proper misdirection proper handling are the important things.
I've palmed off cards sometimes and I knew that part of the cards were protruding from my hand - but never tot caught. And it's not because the people I work for are polite - they're not in this respect. I used to do a piece at my lectures - talking about some magicians asking me how come they're always caught palming a card even though they do a great palm. Well, I watched some of them. What they do is just about TELL the spectators that there's a card hidden in the hand. I guess it's a subconscious thing. See, it's frustrating to do such great "moves" and not have the layman realize it. Yeah, magic can be frustrating. Anyway, I watch this guy palm off the card, beautifully. And then I see him throw quick glances at that hand! He doesn't realize he's doing it, but he's telling everyone else to look at my hand, see how cleverly I'm hiding a card! That's it. The next thing he knows, a spectator asks, "What's that in your hand?"! I didn't make this up. I've seen it numerous times. Gotta' tell you - I don't get caught with a card in my hand. Ever. I think I wrote this somewhee - but I've been asked how I replace a palmed card. My answer, at that time, was - Are you serious? If I go through the trouble of palming a card, why the h... would I want to replace it? Anyway... Regards, Randy. HARRY.

Harry, that was excellent. The question was asked because 93 of the last 46 "card to wallet" wallets released to the magic fraternity are presented with promise of avoiding that nasty palm.
Yet, most can present a routine with the entertainment built-in like "The Pecking Bird" (REPUTATION-MAKERS)and have a lot of success-- and just use the direct method as described. And, fool them silly as well. |

Randy: Darn it, you DO have good taste! I used the Pecking Bird at every table when I worked The Little Club a hundred years ago. It's one of the reasons I named that book REPUTATION-MAKERS. HARRY. (PS: there's no way to get caught with the palm if done as described and "well.")

Misdirection is a big key to palming, why don't more books and routines give more help setting up the moment one should palm. I've never found a really good book on misdirectiob, they are vague, general, each trick has that moment when it's safe to palm. I could sure use some help with that.

Hi Mystic: I thought I did that in all my writings whenever I talked about palming. HARRY.

If you take a look at Harry's "One Hand Top Palm Method" from RIM-SHOTS-- and follow it just as described, I don't think you really CAN do it at the wrong time. At the table or behind the bar, it is really hard not to do it properly. As a bonus, though not mentioned in Harry's text explicitly-- it is an automatic glimpse as well. Contingent on the specific routine, that lets you build the heck out of the finale'.
Harry's "Magician vs. Gambler" as in PERSONAL SECRETS has the misdirection built in as well-- there is just SO much cover, courtesy of your helper, that specific technique is not particularly important-- and the smash finale' that follows just "can't happen," and is more than enough to get gasps from even well-lubricated audiences. So strong, IMO, that it is even more plausible / impossible after you have established yourself a bit with other effects first. |
