Personally, I don't think anybody should advertise 'HYPNOTRICKS' on this forum. This isn't another dig at Aley LeRoy/Johnathan Royle (he gets enough as it is), put surely the more professional amongst us can raise their hands and agree?

Mel,
I'm afraid my hand stays lowered. The whole purpose of a stage hypnosis show is to *entertain* the audience, not to do a scientific study of hypnotic phenomena. Hypno-tricks look impressive and entertaining to the audience---and indeed to the subjects---and can be a powerful "convincer", especially when you have a skeptical and rowdy audience whose attention has to be drawn to---and kept on---what is happening on the stage. |

I probably should have made myself clearer.
I do perform pseudo-hypnosis effects often, because, as you say, audiences find them tremendously appealing. However, I am specifically referring to 'HYPNO-TRICKS' by Johnathan Royle. An extremely cheap, easily obtainable E-Book. I purchased the book purely because of the lack of information regarding fake hypnosis material and can honestly say that if I knew what was inside the book I never would have purchased it in the first place. It becomes quite apparent the Mr. Royle has no qualms whatsoever about publishing other performers material, and while some of these performers are no longer here to argue their point, others are. This subject is extremely difficult to discuss on an open forum without causing even more damage. Without meaning to sound hypocritical, I strongly suggest that we stop posting messages regarding Alex LeRoy, Johnathan Royle or any of his products, regardless of whether there are complaints or praises, because this, in effect, is free advertising/marketing and can only be damaging to our profession. I don't mean this post to read like an anti-Royle campaign. As I have posted elsewhere, he gets enough as it is, but please, if only out of respect for other performers, stay away. Mel. |

If there is an issue over what Royle sells, then those that affected personally by him should go after the matter. However, I still stand on my position that he disseminates good material and is readily available on ebay any given day of the week. It is good material for any performers virtual library.
I don't see it as free marketing or advertising than it would be for any other book or video being discussed on this forum. Martin

Gerrardlo,
Yes, their willingness is part of it, but it is your presentation that is likely to increase their willingness to participate. The book also includes MASS Audience Tests, which can (and must) be used in a new situation. These tests will not only show you several forms of presentation but also will let you know who the most susceptible are, so you can work with them individually later.

Ok let me put it like this.
The "New Encylopedia of Stage Hypnotism" is NOT all you need to know. It is certianly a good reference source and should be read, but is incomplete. As far as "hypno tricks" any good hypnotist knows what Dr. Omni mentioned. The show must go on. I have an entire "emergency show" that I can do which the audience, short of a trained hypnotist, will swear is hypnosis. That is what they pay for and this is what they get. So to look down on a guy who sells it based souly on that is a bit disingenuous. I will not comment further on his information good or bad, only that "hypno tricks" are NOT a bad thing to know.

I am currently reading "Confessions of a Hypnotist: Everything You Ever Wanted to Ask About Hypnosis But Were Afraid to Ask by Jonathan Royle". I can't rate it enough. Easy reading and tells you everthing you need to know.

Hello all, this being my first post on magic Café,i will just say that I am starting studies as a hypnotist just to gain an insight into more effective suggestive mentalism .derren browns work is so impressive it showed me the value of a good grounding in the study of hypnotism and related areas .i am reading confessions of a hypnotist (j royle) and I am so far impressed .i wouldnt say I have a massive future or am a natural talent in the area like others here(peace out) but I'm sure it can be utillised.
I am trying to find a way of utilising hypno techniques on an audience to present magic without them being aware of the basic method(hypnotism) how effective can this be ? any examples would be appreciated |

Here's a question for those of you who seem to think that you can "learn to be a stage hypnotist from one book (or heaven forbid!, one dvd):"
Did you learn to be a competent MAGICIAN or competent PERFORMER from just ONE book or dvd that was about that field? If your answer is "yes," then I have serious doubts about your competence. If your answer is "no," then apply the same logic to learning stage hypnosis and learn it properly - from multiple sources that include numerous books, live instruction and video learning. Thus endeth the lesson... Lee Darrow, C.H.

I have just finished watching Jonathon Royle's 'There's no such thing as hypnosis' and found it very very usefull. I know he is not well liked round these parts but the dvd set was spot on. I am currently reading his book and I will let you know what I think of that when I have finished it.
