A note on the chop cup. If you're going to do it. Seriously consider using a regular size one.
A small one is rather suspicious. A normal one can at least carry crayons for the kids, mini candy canes for the holiday parties, etc. That way you don't walk up with a cup not recognized in the environment you're in. Just a thought. |

Here's what I have to say on coins...
One of my favorite Dvds out there is Ponta the Smith's "Sick." I'm sure many will disagree with my suggestion due to it's difficulty, but if you're willing to put in the practice, it has some really, really good routines on there. Particularly, I liked his version of 3-fly, which I changed and added the same sort of ending that Michael Vincent does in his. The Winged Silver is GREAT especially if you don't want to invest in a shell. Ponta the Smith also gave me the inspiration for my one coin routine.. Out of all my coin dvd's and books, that DVD has given me the most material, rather it be by inspiration, or actual teaching. But again, keep in mind that Ponta the Smith teaches rather advanced sleight of hand and will take time to master. I did however learn my first real coin trick from his DVD. I tackled what I thought to be hardest first. There are more difficult things out there, no doubt... But, his dvd isn't beginner's material either. I'm very happy that I focused on his dvd first. It's been well worth the time A truly amazing and not too difficult coins through the table is on Jay Noblezada's "In the beginning there were coins." Not to mention the in-depth teaching of so many great sleights, but he explains all the basic moves REALLY well. Moves I thought I could do well, he improved upon for me instantly by his clear teachings. I recommend getting 5 dollar sized coins, 5 Eisenhower dollars to try it out and if you really get serious about it, getting 5 Morgan or Peace dollars handle a lot better as well as have a better sound. Unless someone's hands are too small to work with larger coins, I recommend that everyone try to work with Dollar sized coins, despite what anyone else may think. They're a lot more visual regardless of audience size than a half dollar sized coin. Not sure how far a long you are in coins, but the essentials are... Work on a good classic palm, natural finger palm, retention vanish, classic palm vanish.. at least in my opinion. (Jay Noblezada teaches all of these things very well on that dvd) I'm no master at coins, but if I could go back and give myself advice to lead me to where I am now like this, I would say exactly that. |

Hi Montana
Sponge balls are great, you just need to choose the group that you perform them for. Usually if they are an upbeat friendly group they seem to go over really well. It could also be just coincidence but I do feel they play better for groups of women. They also play well for guys but once you've got them on side. In regards to OTHER effects I think you should consider adding some walkaround mentalism into your act for texture. e.g Directors Cut or A Business Card Drawing Duplication. Again, I feel it's all about reading the crowd and choosing the right groups for certain effects. I hope the above has been of some help. |

I think it all depends on your "style". Are you a funny guy? Or maybe a serious mentalist? What is your character when performing?
Finally...do you R E A L L Y need more tricks? Have you perfected the ones you´ve got, or are you just "wanting more" because it´s fun to buy and learn new tricks? Doc Eason did 2x30 minutes of only cards in his Bar Magic series...so I don´t think you need to worry about being card heavy. Andre PS. Are you from Sweden? Ds
My background: Loved magic for 25 years, always wanted to do paid gigs but never had the courage. Faced my fears some years ago and went pro.

My suggestions (not card related)
-Roths Coins Across -5 to 10 bill transpo -Crazy Mans Handcuffs + broken resorted -Sponge Bunnies -Wonderland Bill -Liquid Metal/Spoon Bending Montana76, are these 4 restaurant gigs or private gigs? If 4 private gigs a week, that's strong work getting out there and hustling gigs. |

Thank you all once again! STEALLAR tips here!!
AndreJ: I am from Norway! Chamberlain: I'll describe the gigs: A: This gig was a corporate high-end event for only 7 employees. I got this through a strolling birthday party gig (for a 30-year old) I did a couple of months ago). B: Strolling gig/standup for yearly employee party for a shopping center. Got this from the same party as A. C: Strolling gig for a yearly employee party for a shoppinc center. Got this from the same party as A. D: A private birthday party for a 40-year old woman I met at a bar. Her husband called me after a couple of days and wanted to hire me. I haven't done gigs for longer than about six months but I am happy to say that all of these were paid gigs. |

I have to agree with all the votes for sponges and chop cups.
I also got a lot of mileage out of a Johnson copper silver brass. There's just no way for people to explain it. Great effect. I also agree with AndreJ. Do you really need more? Or maybe just different? The longer I performed, the more I did with less. Just something to think about. You'd also be surprised how much fun you can have with a couple or three hot rods. Muahahaha!
Performing magic unprofessionally since 2008!
