I have recently purchased several sets of gaffed cards and find they quickly become sticky. This is not an issue of oil deposits building up over time as one set was gummed up in less than two days of handling (probably going through the routine less than a dozen times. I have gaffed sets from years ago that are still in perfect working order.
I have collected the following links where similar issues are touched on but there seems to be a systematic quality issue from USPC. Anyone have any more insight? http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......orum=203 http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......orum=203 http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......orum=203 http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......orum=203 |

with the following musing: I suspect the cards are being produced on a different set of machines compared to those used for regular production cards. They may even be produced in a different country. I have noticed many gaff cards that don't seem to have the same finish as regular cards. Fortunately, there are some gaffs that do match well and sometimes the variability doesn't affect their use. But, it does have to be factored in to your assessment of the viability of a trick. Anyone have any hard data on this? I don't want to buy gaffed cards that cannot be used for any length of time. |

This "feature" nearly ruined my business back in 2009 when I started with our Phoenix Decks in 2009.
When USPC moved from Cincinnati to Erlanger KY, they had severe problems with their sheet fed press. All my first decks in 2009 were produced on the machine and on Bicycle paper, that started to clump within shortest time. The bigger machine of them had no problem, but you could only get decks produced on it with quantities above 15000 decks. Most trick decks are produced in smaller quantities and therefore were printed on the "problem machine". All decks produced in 2009 and 2010 in Erlanger might have this problem, newer decks should not have the problem. The producers of trick decks know about the problem from back then. Ask the producer upfront when their decks were produced and if the decks have good quality. All Phoenix Decks are in perfect quality, the last remainder are a few SUM Decks that I do not really want to sell anymore because of this bad issue. Btw: it took me 18 months before USPC committed the fact that they had these problems (before their official statement was: no problems known) and that I got a partial compensation. If anybody of you still have Phoenix Decks from the first batch: please contact me, I will replace them.

Due to reasons mentioned they are unusable. I would really like to exchange them as I haven't bought any phoenix decks since due to this issue. If you could exchange them that would be great. Thank you for acknowledging the issue, it's really appreciated. |

Thanks for the info Card-Shark. I knew there was something going on. Did USPC ever tell you the what and the why of the problem? It seems like it was a problem with the finish. Thanks again...

They never officially confirmed the problem. I spoke with Richard Turner who was consultant for their quality back then. Other sources tell me another story.
But one magician even went that far and made photos under the microscope. Around the edges we could see small black dots. It seems that USPC had problems with the glue in the paper coming out after a while and collecting dust. It would explain a lot.

About second half of 2009 until 2010. not sure exactly whem they managed to fix it. When the box still says Cincinatti Ohio, you are safe. Erlanger KY at the beginning was terrible.
