The 2016 Pacific Northwest Gathering of Dark Magi
January 28 through 31, 2016 McMenamins Edgefield Lodge in Portland, Oregon. Our first meeting of the Pacific Northwest Gathering of Dark Magi was in January of 2015, and it became clear that we wanted the event occur annually. Here is our howl to that moon. The 2016 Pacific Northwest Gathering of Dark Magi will be a time to share knowledge, experiences, an amazing camaraderie, and generally revel in all aspects of performing storytelling-based bizarre magic. The meeting will be fairly informal and will include many small break-out group sessions covering a range of topics of interest to the bizarrist. These sessions will be peer led and everyone is expected to contribute – no formal lectures or performances, just peer-to-peer sharing. The Edgefield imposes a “no vending on campus” policy, but in a way, that is good as it allows us to concentrate on supporting each other, brainstorming, and learning. And, now for the best part: the venue is reported to be haunted! (See this and this.) We are trying to arrange an event Saturday evening with a live audience to give the us a chance to practice performing in front of a live (non-magician) audience and to give the attendees a chance to watch and study each other perform. More to come on that as it unfolds. This meeting is not a money-making venture, we are hoping to attract just enough people to cover the costs, make it affordable to all, and maintain an intimate atmosphere as much as possible. As it stands now, registration would be $250 per attendee. Although we are looking at ways to decrease the registration fee, I am not overly optimistic. One significant other or family member other may attend at no additional cost. Rooms for the ENTIRE stay range from $320 to $408, not including tax, currently 13.45%. Thus, not including your food and travel expenses, the out-of-pocket cost for the entire weekend currently ranges from $570 to $658 (excluding tax). You can register here. Please register by 13 April, 2015. You can pay for your room at a later date on the same web page. If you register now, and we find a way to decrease the registration fee, we will joyfully refund the difference or out it towards the cost of your room. More information and details will be forthcoming. Please PM me if you have any questions or comments.

The 2015 Gathering was great. Mike MacDonald guided the rest of us in the use of props to create a special connection with the sitters. The 1st Gathering was mostly introduction to props and ways to use them. The 2016 Gathering will be centering more on the theater of Bizarre performances: dress, elocution and deportment, blocking, audience interaction to name a few. You know the trick, but how about a great presentation to go with it?
Rather than sit and watch a presentation, attendees are encouraged to bring a routine, with props and patter, they need to have critiqued and worked on. Use this group to polish your diamond in the rough with peers who want you to succeed. 2 days and 3 nights to hammer out what you want to know about the magic you perform. Level learning to the degree you want to take it, with others only interested in helping you and learning themselves along the way. Pros, Semi-Pros, gifted amateurs and beginners, we have them all, and they ALL had fun! Yitzhak has done a great job of getting this info together and organizing it. Let us know if you would like to be a part of the 2016 NorthWest Gathering of Dark Magi.
