The sheer hypocrisy of so many people in this 'community' beggars belief - albeit it simply reaffirms my dislike of many people involved in the ART of Magic in this day and age. P.S. I can't believe the Genii forum allows such posts. Maybe I should scan my vast collection of Genii Magazines, and share them for free online also?

So come on Mr. Kaufmann - your call.
Do you condone such posts? If so, I have nearly every copy of Genii from 1948 and a free weekend. Please advise.

I'm wondering how serious Josh T Magic (the OP) IS.
On March 15, he PM'd me. I sent him my email address. He emailed back, asking for my advice and counsel on how to write a script for his act. I emailed Josh T with some general answers, and some questions to stimulate his thinking so he would be able to phrase some specific questions. I also sent him a copy of my script for the Elusive Silk Vanish, to provide an example of a practical, successful, tested script for a trick that, at his age, he could perform successfully. It's now a month later, and I have yet to receive any sort of reply. This has happened several times in the past two years with other young fellows. I'm beginning to think that it's not worth my time to be helpful. I would be interested in hearing from others about this type of situation.

Dick, I understand your feeling. I have been there too. if you want to help do so with out exspectations. some people today just take everything for granted and don't have the politeness to say, atleast, thank you.
I know that you have a big heart for magic and you have a big knowledge about it too. Some people appriciate that atleast I know of a Dutch magcian who is very happy with your stories and help. |

Add to this the Fitzkee Trilogy and I will certainly add another vote for the Books of Wonder!

Hi, Dick- just a couple of thoughts about what your time is worth. My mother used to teach bagpipes. She told me that for every ten people who gushed enthusiastically to her about how they had always wanted to play, only one would show up for a first lesson. Of any ten who showed up for that first lesson, only one would actually progress to being a piper. She had an offer once to join a band that could have been a life changer for her. It was by invitation only and everyone in the area wanted to be part of this band. She declined because it would have required her to be at band practice on the weekends, which is when she taught. She chose to keep teaching pipes to people (many of whom never did learn to play more than a couple of tunes before they quit) instead of furthering her own piping career. She only had one student surpass her. His entire ambition when he showed up for the first lesson was to learn to play one tune on the pipes. Just one. And he became one of the best pipers on the West Coast.
You just keep planting seeds and perhaps some of them will grow fruit. The kid who will get your advice and turn it into gold may be the one right after your next temptation to just stop helping. I also remember reading about an author who was often asked for publishing advice. He would spend hours typing advice and get nothing back. Then he got sick of it. Nobody did anything with what he said. And finally he got an idea. Now when someone asks for advice about publishing, he asks to see an example of their writing before he can offer any suggestions. 99% of them never get back to him. The other one percent will usually get something valuable from his advice and is worth his time. I see you, Dick, as noticing the 99% and not being able to find those 1% who really need you. Don't give up, sir. Please. And for the OP, look for the PDF of the free selection from R. Shane's Pentalogy. Free, like I said. Instead of advice, it is loaded with tricks that are all about the presentation. In that case, leading by example makes all the difference. I read that PDF three or four times and then went and bought the hard copy of the book. It was $100 and I don't spend that money lightly. But it was worth every bit. Get the freebie. Learn from it. If you are into "character" magic, get Payne's book Sometimes the Jokes are Just for Me. Worth the money. Great rubrik for being creative, too. -Patrick |

Hi Patrick!
I was just "surfing", and I found your very inspirational note above. Thanks 3 million (inflation!)! Your bag pipes story was just the thing to motivate me! --Also, the author/publishing advice anecdote hit home. It reminded me of one of my old professors who stated at the beginning of one of his lectures: "I'm about to cast imitation pearls before real swine!" "Johnny Appleseed's philosophy!" was/is good!
