Hello - my close friend/cousin in the la area is interested in seeing a performance/dinner at the magic castle. I've turned him onto magic a lot more lately but he would go strictly as a laymen with this girlfriend...
I've never been but I understand the only way to go is through a member... Can anyone verify that this is correct? I wasn't sure where to post this so I chose this subforum as its about the business end. I post mostly in the Mentalism subforums and the app forums... |

From the Magic Castle website:
"The Magic Castle is an exclusive private club. You must be a member or have a guest card from a member-in-good-standing to gain admittance..." http://www.magiccastle.com/visiting/index.cfm I think you also have to make a dinner reservation as a part of your visit. That's what I've heard (and experienced), and that's what is implied on their website: http://www.magiccastle.com/visiting/dresscode.cfm - Donald

Unless they have changed the rules, if you are member of the IBM or SAM magic organizations, they will let you in for a wonderful evening of drinks, dinner, shows in the theater, close-up parlour of mystery, and basement theater, just by showing your membership card.
I believe they will let you in as well if you can show the receptionist a magic trick. I have visited the Magic Castle 3 times over the years and each visit was a wonderful experience. I met so many interesting people, saw fantastic shows, and had a wonderful meal. They were so busy the last time I was there, Joe Berg's brother ask me to entertain a group at one of the tables. It was packed because it was Valentines Day. Chatted with Dai Vernon, and met some very good magician that were only hobbyist, but they were very skilled. I believe you do have to call in advance, but you don't have to make a dinner reservation. They do want know that you are coming. Just call, they will answer any questions you have. Just tell them you are visitation from out of town. If you are not a magician and cannot do a simple trick, then you may not get in. |

Showing the receptionist a magic trick will most definitely not get you in.
Guests are required to make a dinner reservation unless they are going to the club with a member - but they need to get a card from a member to make the reservation. Try going on weeknights if possible - I almost never go on Fridays or Saturdays anymore. Far too crowded. It's a fun night out! Very glad I joined

Just ask a member to send you an e-mail pass. It won't be an inexpensive evening, but it will be an unforgettable one. It seems like two members have already posted here, ask either one for the pass... and mind the dress code; they will deny you entry if your dress is not up to standards.
P.S. Where did the idea come from that you could show the receptionist a trick to get in? Beyond ridiculous!

I think maybe Bill is confusing getting into magic clubs by showing a trick. Membership into IBM, SAM, etc, will often require
you to do a simple trick to become a member. Or that’s the way it used to be. Tom

I'm not sure if anyone is willing to vouch for me and email me a pass, if not I totally understand...
I'd be happy to prove I'm a working amateur (hard to say pro since I only book a few gigs a year currently) or explain what groups I'm a part of...if this request is out of line then please ignore all. |

DynaMix, send me your close friend's e-mail address, I can send him a pass. He just has to agree to all the rules, dress and decorum. Members are allowed and encouraged to provide passes to guests. Magicians always want an audience.

It was published in Genii Magazine by "Bill Larson" himself. I visited the Castle in 1969, mid 1970's, and early 1980's. I did offer to show a trick to the receptionist but she declined and let me in. I was a member of the IBM and SAM on the other occasions. I guess it is just as ridiculous as saying, "Open Sesame" to the bookcase. I was there - you weren't, you are more the welcome to search the Genii Magazines yourself. Yes, it is true, men have to wear a suite and tie, and ladies dresses or very nice attire. Even Harry Lorayne was turned away one because his wife came dressed in jeans, even though he said they were the most expensive brand name on the current market, they still turned him away. He wrote about it in his magazine. Quote:

It was more the number of people attending the Castle. On my last 2 visits I did not have dinner because I was alone on business trips. I guess the new owners and board have made changes to the rules, which is expected in these times. |

We went with a group of friends from KAX (KIDabra Mid-year Convention). There was a problem with our shuttle service (from Oxnard), and so the group we were with didn't arrive until 6:45 for our 6:00 reservation. We ended up eating in the Houdini Seance Room, which was a nice bonus, but we rushed through our meal so as not to miss some shows. A few of us at the table had our appetizers arrive AFTER our main course was served (which is unusual). But the food was excellent, as was the service overall. We couldn't get tickets for the Palace show, because they were all gone (for all of the show times). We even tried to wait in line by the doors, in case seats became open, but that didn't work out. But we did get to see the both performers (early and late) in the Parlour. So, even weekdays can be busy. - Donald

Tickets? That they never had when I was there, see that is another thing they have changed. They use to just post the times of the shows and the people went into the theaters and sat where available.

The Palace and Peller theaters are both ticketed shows now - depending on the night, you can find a seat after the ticket holders have all been admitted (though I'd never try it on a weekend as that's a lost cause, but as Donald said even the middle of the week can be packed.) It's definitely grown in popularity in recent years. Great for business as we'd like to buy the property one day, but not always so great for walk-in members who are sometimes turned away at the door due to capacity issues.

I was just there again visiting a few weeks ago for Sunday brunch with the family. It's always a treat!
Andrew - hope to catch you there next time I'm in LA! I prefer weeknights too as its a better adult exoerience but with kids Sunday (busy as it always is) is still awesome! Try to catch a reserved seance in the Houdini Room - even most longtime members or guests have never experienced it. The artifacts and memorabilia in the room are stunning! You don't necessarily need to have dinner to do the seance now. Info on the castle site.

The other way to gain access to the castle is by staying at the Magic Castle Hotel next to the Castle. It is a wonderful little hotel the service is outstanding and I would highly recommend it. We stayed there over Valentines Day and attended the Castle's Valentines celebration. wonderful time and worth every penny.
