Hi all!
My name's Oli, and I'm from East London/Essex. I'm an amateur magician/mentalist and I've only been doing it for about a year, so I still have so much to learn. I'm a student at the moment and I study chemistry at the University of Cambridge. I've been a lurker here for a while and I think to finally time to join the community to start pitching in my own ideas and getting inspiration from you. The community here seems to be one of the most welcoming and helpful communities I've come across, and I'm more than excited to become a part of it. Thanks for giving your time to read this. I look forward to the thought provoking discussions and great ideas which lie ahead. Take care all, Oli |

Welcome to the forum Oli. You are right about the resources available here. Great place to learn. What kind of magic do you perform?

Thanks for the warm welcome, oneleggedwonder.
I might get a bit of disliking for this, but generally I try to go for strong effects which require really little effort! As much as I'd love to be a card shark and SOH expert, my course at university is rather intense and doesn't allow me much free time to master advanced sleights. So I work hard on some strong, simple tricks, most of which involve cards but some are mentalism effects. Even though I tend to stay awau from difficult effects, I love learning about all kinds of magic and seeing where I'd eventually like my performances to end up. Looking forward to the summer when I don't have exams so I can really focus on getting the hang of more powerful magic. What about you? What kind of magic do you do? |

Welcome Oliver Wallen,
There is nothing wrong with simple tricks done well. I do a few flourishes to impress but my Card Magic is done with just a few sleights. You'll find the Café to be a pleasant (and dangerous) diversion from your studies. Eyes on the prize. -Mary Mowder |

Hi Oli,
It is a principle of Chemistry that matter cannot be created or destroyed, but in magic we do it whenever we want. Welcome to the Café from another chemist. Richard |

Welcome Oli. I have been doing magic for many decades, and I still prefer strong magic with the simplest of moves.
I never really spent too much time on any flourishes or particularly difficult moves. KJ |
