I was just curious about any experience with open mic nights and magic.
Have you done an open mic night before with magic? Can you share the experience? I'm kind of stuck on which sort of trick I should perform myself. If anyone would have any suggestions, that'd be pretty cool. It's not that I don't know tricks I can do, it's that I'm not sure which type of trick I should do. I'm definitely interested in exploring open mic nights for exposure and experience. I'm primarily a close-up magician and I'm use to VERY strong reactions from what I do. I haven't really tested out material for platform/stage and I'm not convinced that what I'd do would generate as powerful reactions and deliver such an experience. I'm on my way to becoming an ENTERTAINER and I'm definitely going to put a lot of work in to presentation, especially since there's a lot of comedians at these sort of things, I've gotta make sure I can make everyone laugh too. At the same time, I still want to deliver some mind blowing magic. I'd love to hear a story or experience, anything on the topic would be well appreciated. Tell me about your open mic night experiences and things that you learned. Thanks in advance! |

I have done open mic with magic in London UK, and Auckland NZ and a few other places.
My first time at a open mic I do my single rope routine. If I go back I try out new stuff. Platform type stuff works better but it can be fun making a small effect play big. Also build a relationship with the open mic guys. One gig in London I would turn up early get a table and do close up as a warm up to the main event. For this I would sandwich new effects in between one I knew soild. A good open mic well have a audience that well laugh at your mistakes, give constructive feedback and cheer when you get it right. I love doing them and I suugest find a fw you can go to and just hit them hard. Hope this helps

I have attempted this with mixed results. Usually the noise level is lighting is for a rock band and not a "focused attention" performer.
However, if the venue is small you can fill in during the time a new band thinks it need to get set up or leave. Your efforts can be appreciated if you don't need a sound system and can perform in front of the stage or dais. If the "open Mic" is for a poetry reading group or similar you can do magic and be well received if it is artistic and tells a story. By biggest problem has been respect from other performers wishing to hog the stage or limelight. So, the answer is -- maybe ...

I did this more back in the 80's when comedy was everywhere.
It led to some gigs as Comedy Clubs were popping up in the back rooms of restaurants, pizza shops etc., etc, etc. Response was mixed as my on stage persona was mixed. With my harmonica, I was also able to sit in with bands. If your close up is done at chest level rather than table stuff, you can do well.

Zephury, some conventions and get togethers offer open mic opportunities. This is the 6th year of Magic Valley Magic and it offers both stage and closeup open mic opportunities. And it's FREE! October 2-3, 2015. It is within driving distance for you.

If you are going to hit up an open mic this video might be helpful. Nick and Erik have both road-tested tons of their material at open mics and their advice is very useful
