I have been studying magic since I was 8. I tried too pursue it in 2009 but it didn't work out. Long story short I landed in the hospital and got diagnosed bi polar but I can say I still have the drive. I can't do it professionally. However I plan too do just as a hobby. I hope I have the chance too get too know some of you.

Welcome googoodolls,
I'm sorry to hear of your setback but glad to hear it hasn't kept you from pursuing Magic. Most of the members here are not Professional Magicians so don't worry about not that. What kinds of Magic are you interested in? -Mary Mowder |

Thanks Mary for for kind welcome. On the set back it hasn't been fun but I'm pretty use too being bi polar. I'm more into close up now. Back in 2009 I was working with Craig Browning, he was helping me create my mentalism act with my punk rock attitude. Because that's my favorite style of music too listen too. I like everything except I never wanted too be a children's performer or an escape artist and definitely not a juggler.

Hello googoodolls/Ryan, welcome to the Café! I am fairly new here myself, but all are welcome and I am certain that more amateurs like myself hang out here all the time. Glad to hear you came out OK and are still practicing magic, it is just so much fun to do, right?

Welcome to the magic café close up is a great way to start I started with close up mainly because I had a zero budget for buying magic and made my own with what I could find I would say learn the basics like palming French drop elmsley count you can learn them off youtube the basics come up in a lot of tricks you might buy or make once learned Google for the complete list of basics and learn a trick that incorporates each basic this speeds up the learning curve coins and cards is all you need. And hundreds of tricks are now available to you as for juggling I'm not into juggling but I do the juggling scarves because as I go on into my show I can produce the scarves make them disappear cards thru silk then I do a short juggling with them. Over time your taste will change I do a little of everything. But I focus on either cards coins or mentalist starting put its hard not to be scattered all over the place prefer haunted magic themes and a lot of magic can fit in that category. I use to do a straight jacket escape but dropped it out of my act a stroke makes it difficult I use to hate card tricks but these days so much can be done with them instead of pick a card is that your card.

I caught the magic bug at eight and I'm 48 now the bug has never left me. If anything I can share its that good magic does not have to be expensive a lesson I learned the hard way. Those cheesey magic books you find at the library are a wealth of information. I try to rework it into something new and fresh. Just because the technique may be easy doesn't mean its any less amazing. I also get a lot out of DVDs these days I'm more selective of what I buy. Pack small plays big is one requirement practical I can perform on the streets or largest theater with what I got has to fit within my theme of my act. Ideal are props that can have several uses like the thumbtip.

Getting geared up for another season of street performing June is my busiest month almost every day in June is booked this is when I find out the new things I've added works or I fall flat on my face I am also trying a new approach to getting the audiences attention without barking at them.I'll keep you posted what it is I do and if it works. I plan on doing the invisible chair where you sit on nothing and just sit there until someone curious stops by I guess I will see if its practical performing locally ok traveling maybe not so much I hope to video tape there reactions.

The hardest task for me is linking up effects that become a routine lets take rubber bands I do crazy mans hand cuffs with a broken restored rubber band linking rubber band and rubber band up the nose now I have a complete act using rubber bands I try to go with three coins I might do coins across coins and silk and coins with a misers dream and a trick using a jumbo coin three card tricks if it requires a mimicked card I tend to do that first and two others that use just the deck.

And since I have already introduced a silk I might do the juggling scarves for a few seconds or a trick using a silk. Ideally I like to produce the scarves in three different ways reach in the air and produce one a thumbtip version and one using a Gimmicked card used for producing money but I modified it a bit carry seven coins on me and I have over an hour of show. In one pocket.

I have been diagnosed bi polar also. Right now I'm on the manic side, you know how that goes, studying all I can as fast as I can. This is also my second or third go round with magic.
