Dear Harrison:
I started in closeup magic, however performed professionally as a stand up magician. I do have basic chops in close skills as a generalist. Would this qualify me as skill full enough to perform as a trade show magician? In other words how skillful do you need to be as a trade show performer? I do have likability. |

Hey Don
From my perspective being likable is a key factor to success on the show floor. Since you're already a performer you know this - people are people. They may respond differently in different settings or venues, but when all is said and done the age old adage applies. "If they like you they'll like your magic." I mean, YES, we need to properly execute the technical aspects of performing. That goes without saying. But since you've already been performing stand up, you've already developed the skills needed to do close-up (except maybe expanding your inventory of sleights). So, I wouldn't let your lack of close-up experience stop you. A real skill that is necessary is the ability to talk with potential clients in their own language. Many trade show performers have excelled without having the sleight-of-hand skill of a Gary Plants, or Michael Skinner. But they did have, as you mentioned, "Likability" and they knew how to present their program to those perspective customers in such a way that the buy felt they absolutely had to buy. Hope this helps... If not, let me know and I'll be happy to expound! |
