I am looking for some input on making a silk switch. I can't use a due tube for it. Basically, I want to take a a white silk, be able to show both sides. Then, I want to wipe my hands with it, open it back up, and it's become stained with color from my hands. Right now, I'm just using a double sided silk and turning it over. Was hoping I would be able to find a better and more deceptive solution. Any help would be great!

The color changing streamer changes with a swipe of the hand or a wave of it in the air. There exists a relatively cheap set of nylon double color changing silks that works with a swipe of the hand (not very deceptive usually). I use to have a single that would go from red to blue using the same construction, haven't seen that lately.

Hey Plink,
I think I should mention that I am looking for something self contained if it exists or if I could construct it. I like the direction your idea goes in. The first thought I had was the ring method in Tarbell, but I don't think it would look right. The main reason I want to go self contained is that this will take place the middle of my act, and I will have already used my sleeve space for other productions.

Take a look at Spellbinder's "Whap!" from The Wizards' Journal #28. It might be just what you need and you get to make it yourself.

Thanks Jim!
I am going to download this and check it out. It certainly sounds just like what I need.

Bill,
If I buy one of these, do you think it would be possible to adapt the principle to silks, or would they be too light of material? Quote: On May 25, 2015, Bill Hegbli wrote:

I received the "Whap" from Spellbinder, and while it is good…very good actually, It's not exactly what I am looking for. The closest thing so far sounds like it might be the dirty hand towel gag. I guess I might order one to see if I can adapt the principle to silks. If anyone who owns this has an opinion of whether or not this count be done, it would be helpful.
Thanks again

Allen, The dirty hand gag is an ultra simple change. If silk is too light weight, you might try some split shot along the edge.
The late Bob McAllistet at one time sold "McDots". They were m*gn*t*c, and, if I remember, about 1/4" in diameter. You haven't given us much specific to "go on".

Allen, there is not simple solution to this using a silk. Everything else would involve reels, pulls, and switches. It is not that great a sounding change for an elaborate set up.
Just do a hand to hand exchange using your pocket or ball the silk and stick it on long pin, and hang it where it can't be seen. No need to show the hands empty as it is a gag. So put it away with the regular silk. |
