I wanted to know if the silk to balloon trick is stage magic only can it be done up close or how far away do you need to be.

MagicIan performed his version about 4 ft from us at the local Magic Circle, followed by his balloon penetration with coat hanger.
I can't imagine why one would want to do it on stage.

I hate to burst your balloon, but the classic silk in balloon is not what is considered a close up trick. There are things that shouldn't be seen and sounds that might make a person question. It does not have be done on a stage, but it is a stand-up trick, in front of an audience several feet away. The balloon is not examined beforehand, as it sets in a stand, or you have to have it out of sight like in a bag or below the table, or in a box, etc. After the balloon appears in the balloon, it can be handed to a person to hold, then it is burst at the conclusion to release the silk. Of course most, do not hand it out, as that stops the show, while you wait to retrieve the balloon. Order more balloons to practice the trick.
http://themagicwarehouse.com/TA9171/Silk-in-Balloon.html http://themagicwarehouse.com/cgi-bin/fin......=BALLOON There is a new close-up silk in/through balloon, it is kind of expensive, but it can be done close-up and the balloon can be handed to a spectator with the silk inside. It is called, "Wonder Silk in Balloon by RYOTA" and sold here: http://www.penguinmagic.com/p/S18717 those that say they have purchased it, like it a lot. While ordering, order more balloons as only 4 come with it. So you can practice it. http://www.penguinmagic.com/p/S8834 http://www.penguinmagic.com/p/S12373 http://www.abbottmagic.com/Extra-Balloon......oryId=-1 |

The magician vanishes the silk with a pull, reel, Vanishing Silk Wand, etc. The silk instantly appears in the balloon. The assistant can display the balloon containing the same color silk, or she can throw the balloon in the air and catch it. The magician brings forth a long metal needle with ribbon attached, penetrates the balloon, going in one side and coming out the other without bursting the balloon. Displays the balloon with the needle clearly seen inside the balloon. Then the magician removes he needle leaving the ribbon running through the balloon. The magician then stabs the balloon, and it burst, releasing the silk from it prison. This only one stage presentation I can imagine to use the Silk In Balloon on stage. |

Good thoughts, Bill -- but I meant WHY would you want to do this?
by "stage" I presume a large audience with limited "first hand view" of what is transpiring. If you have but a single chance to kindle a 30 year magic memory on such a stage, what effect would you perform? I would not choose a silk in a ballon or balloon penetration.

Actually it is over 50 years. I always liked the Tannen Catalog, showing the drawing of the Silk on Rod, Silk on Sash, Silk in Balloon trick, or Silk on Sword. If I had a beautiful assistant why wouldn't you want to do a "Flash" silk transposition effect for your audience.
To not perform a silk transposition is your choice, I hope it is okay for me to see it differently then you do. I think it is nice quick stunning effect. What trick or effect would I chose, there are so many, but I am old school. Milk in Lightbub, Garter on ladies leg, etc. |

I love silk effects stage and close up. It is the balloon at a distance that I have little confidence in.

I'm not afraid of any balloon!!!!! (I carry a PIN!) HEE HEE!
Well...ladies (in the "gay nineties") carried hat pins! I just had a stupid stroke of genius! If the performer used a "three-forty" balloon, he could produce a "three by thirty-six STREAMER instead of a dinky 12" silk! (HA! John Shirley never thought of THAT!)
