Any help with candles? I have Magic Nook's RC Self Lighting Candle. I love the effect but I have a problem with it. It isn't examinable (not really an issue but I would like to be able to allow my "guests" to pick it up and look at it). I'm also looking for a way to have a candle self extinguish. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Make your own candles with short wicks.

Michael J. Fraughton's book, Dark Waltz, includes a good idea on how to create your own self-extinguishing candles (tea lights) that you might wish to look into. Completely examinable & reusable and, best of all, quite simple.

Jim Magus has a brilliant and very simple self-extinuishing candle method in his "Midnight Seance" effect from the Horror Magic book. It is surefire (no pun intended), yet you only have a few minutes before it extinguishes after you light it, and is therefore not under your full control. It is my preferred method though... Super simple. Check it out!

Lary Kuehn's BBoB (Bigger Book of Boo) also has a section on self-extinguishing wax candles.

I'm working on a new candle idea for seances in which you pick up a taper candle (not one of those big fat ones) and as you are talking, it lights "by itself." You then hand the lit candle to a spectator and have the person recite a "spell" and then pass the lit candle to someone else. Each person recites the simple spell and whomever is holding the candle and reciting the spell when the candle "extinguishes itself" is obviously in need of exorcism, which is your next effect... but that's another story. Meanwhile, back to the candle, it is an ordinary wax taper candle which can be handled the moment after it lights, and which will go out on its own a few minutes later.

The page in Borodin's "Final Curtain" is 175. The tea light is easier to rig than a taper candle, but the same method works for both. The effect is intensified if someone "innocent" is holding the candle at the time it extinguishes.
