Everyone,
I have been in touch with the good folks over at Dead-On Paper - who released the wildly successful Kickstarter campaign for the Arcana Tarot Playing Cards and then the expansion set for the full major arcana. If you never checked it out, it is here: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/189......cription Adria, at Dead-On Paper, and I have been communicating about thoughts for the remaining 2 yet-undecided cards. I told her I'd make the posting here, so that interested folks can offer up outstanding ideas on what would give the deck more versatility in our line of mystery entertainment. Would it be a gaff card of Lovers showing the two lovers ripped apart? Or Death pointing directly at you? Let your best thoughts come forward and I'll summarize and send off to her (actually, I will also send her the link to this post and see if she's willing to join us here). All the best, David |

Thank you for posting, David! I am looking forward to hearing suggestions for the card art. Death pointing right at you is brilliant! I love it!

Thanks for the link to these, David. I really wish I wouldn't have missed out on them! They look very nice--and that print of the card back would have made some very nicely framed art on my wall.
As for the gaff cards: call me "old school", but in terms of greatest flexibility you can't go wrong with a double backer and a double facer (say, Death and The Lovers, perhaps). They'd open up a world of pre-existing card magic effects. |

Adria, that brings up a good point - if folks here missed out on the Kickstarter campaign and want to purchase the cards, is that going to be possible? I know the major arcana expansion set is not slated to be released until December, but is there any way folks here can pre-order any sets from you?
Thanks, David |

I second the Death pointing card. That's a very cool idea as long as it's subtle. One thing I've always hated about Gaff cards is how fake they mostly look.
Any chance for an Oracle deck reprint? please please.... -robert |

The double back card is a definite and is part of the count for the expansion deck! We have two additional designs we will need to fill-sorry I didn't let you know that the double back was already included in our tally. I promise that Chris won't cheese out on the artwork for the gaff cards
We did have a preorder link up for the cards until a few weeks ago but we had to take it down to get our final numbers for production. The Arcana cards will be available on Dead on Paper in September as long as production goes as scheduled. Robert, we have something special in the works for Oracle to be released at the same time. VERY limited edition. We will also have a black version of the Calaveras cards up on the site in September. In addition, we are expecting the delivery of a ferrous metal Oracle coin later this week or next week. I am so excited to offer them-I wasn't able to get a coin made that is a magnet itself, but the new coins can be used with magnets. I hope that these new coins will be useful for tricks! I love your suggestions so please keep them coming! |

First off I would like to say that the artwork on these cards is absolutely breath-taking... Loving the etched/scrimshaw look of Chris's illustration style. And the divination coin ("YES"/"NO") is beautiful as well, many ideas for Bizarre routines with these items...
As far as gaffed cards go, I really like the idea of the Death Card gaff being Death pointing directly at you! Very clever. As for the Lovers Card gaff, I have an interesting and multifaceted idea, which ties into the regular Death Card as well. Please hear me out, this is not so easy to explain. I have always enjoyed the sheer genius of the New Vision Tarot, which is a complete major and minor arcana Tarot deck that cleverly features the exposed "behind-the-scenes" perspective views of the each card of the standard RWS images. Meaning, instead of looking at the Lovers from a first-person front on view like in most Tarot decks, the New Vision Tarot Lovers Card, shows you the first-person back view of the Lovers (the perspective is from behind them, instead of in front, and so you literally see what is in front of the Lovers)! Every card in the Tarot of New Visions is like this... Revealing what is in front of each standard RWS (Rider-Waite-Smith) card, from the visual perspective of each Tarot card character and scene. (See linked photo below). With that said, my idea is to have the Lovers gaff card be from the rear perspective (no pun intended), just like the New Vision Lovers card, YET Death riding on his horse is what they would be seen looking at, in front of them, the complete Death Card scene would be happening literally right in front of the Lovers (yet this image of Death remains unseen when viewing the regular Lovers Card)!! Powerful!! Make sense?? Side Note: in the New Vision Lovers card at the first link below, you can even see a horse in the background, I would recommend though that for the Lovers gaff, Death (with Horse and Flag and trampled bodies, etc.) be much closer to the Lovers, and not far off and away in the distance. Thus, with this Lovers gaff, two purposes are served, and two magikal outcomes in one are achieved: 1. If the regular Lovers Card is fo***d, it can then later be changed into the Lovers gaff (back view perspective of the Lovers), using your favorite method. Interesting and possibly trippy vantage-point/perspective-transformation of their chosen card! 2. If the regular Death Card is fo***d after the regular Lovers Card was "chosen" (fo***d), then when the regular Lovers Card is transformed (perspective-wise) it would also turn into a Death Card reveal (since the back view Lovers Card would have them looking at Death on his horse.) Imagine this: The regular Lovers Card is chosen (fo***d), and the participant is kindly asked to study its image, figures and symbolism of the card. After they soak in the major details of the regular Lovers Card for a minute or so, they then visualize the image in their mind (t** ch***e Lovers Card for Lovers gaff), you hand them their "chosen" Lovers Card facedown (really now the Lovers gaff), and have them hold onto it (yet without looking at it) and to describe what scene they saw in the card. They will describe seeing "a Man and a Woman each next to a young tree. They look as if they are attempting to touch each other's hands. There is an Angel and a brightly shining Sun above them". After their brief description of their chosen card, they turn over their card (the gaff), only to find that they have described the figures (Man, Woman, Angel, etc.) in reverse (they will have described them as facing them, instead of away from them), as if they were standing in front of the Lovers not behind them. Next another participant chooses a card (fo**e the regular Death Card), this too, is visually internalized by the new participant who chose the card. After have committed the figures, image of the card to memory, they are asked to visualize it (t** ch***e Death Card for Death Pointing gaff), they hold onto their chosen card facedown (really now the Death gaff), and they describe it. Strangely and to everyone's surprise the description of the image of the card they chose (Death riding Horse with Flag) is exactly what the Lovers are looking at in the other participants card (Lovers gaff). For the kicker, the second participant's card is turned over (after they have described it), and Death (gaff) is seen pointing DIRECTLY AT THEM! An ironic aside: If you look at the regular RWS Lovers Card you'll see a snake wrapped all up and around the trunk of the little tree, thus symbolizing the "devil"/death. This might be able to be worked into the presentation. In that the snake in the Lovers Card is what connects it to both the regular Death Card and the Death scene in the Lovers gaff. Also if Death ends up pointing at the second participant (via the Death gaff), then perhaps that subtly implies that they are one of the Lovers (especially if you select a Man as participant one, and a Woman as participant two). It creates an interesting and psychological paradox in the minds of the participants. Bizarre indeed!!! It's very complicated to explain... Please see the pictures at the links below, for a rough idea and basic visual reference: The Lovers Gaff - Rear View (Behind Perspective) https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/236......48aa.jpg Regular Lovers Card - Front View (Facing Perspective) http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-OIbbbyS6z9k/VG......vers.jpg Please feel free to ask me any questions if further clarification is needed. One could also do a convincing remote viewing effect with my Lovers gaff idea above...
Set up: Place the Lovers gaff (see my original post above) on the top of the deck. And the regular Lovers Card on the bottom of the deck. Performance: A participant chooses a tarot card from the major arcana by merely touching one, so that they are not visually influenced by the powerful artwork and symbolism of the Tarot. This is because we want to attempt an experiment in remote viewing (or astral time travel). (fo**e Lovers Card on the bottom via your favorite method, yet don't reveal its face, just pull it aside from the other face down cards, and square the deck back up. This leaves you with the regular Lovers as the chosen card along on the table, and the Lovers gaff one top of the squared up pack). Have the participant remote view the Lovers card (ala "Sanctum II" by Outlaw Effects*) After all the major "hits" have been gained/acquired, with their chosen card (regular Lovers Card) still facedown on the table and unbeknownst to them, ask the participant one last final and important question: "Now are the two people that you said you saw in the picture in your mind, are YOU IN FRONT OF THEM...OR...are YOU BEHIND THEM??" If their answer is: "I am in front of them", flip the card over and end there! "Ggggggggggreat job! You were wonderful! Look at ALL the details you described in the picture you saw in your mind, and here they are on the imgae of card you choose, with out even seeing it..." If their answer is: "I am behind them", pick up the deck and hold it casually in your hand, then pick up the facedown chosen card (regular Lovers Card) in you dealing hand, and gesture with the deck that "Out of ALL 'these' cards you were drawn towards and touched only one card, your attraction card!" (while looking the participant/s in the eyes, on the offbeat t** c****e the regular Lovers Card for the Lovers gaff, and slowly and smoothly and guiltlessly place the deck back on the table). Turn over their chosen (touched) card (now the Lovers gaff), and reveal that the picture in their mind that they verbally described to you, INCLUDING that they were standing directly behind the two people they mentioned in their mental picture is exactly what the image of their chosen card reveals. Ultimately this little built in convincer ("Are you behind them or in front of them?") leaves no room for the participant to back-tract, without getting hung-up on the fact that they were directly asked where they were viewing the two figures (Woman and Man) in relation to where they were standing. If they do end up telling you that they are standing behind them, then play it up big, milk it and then casually reveal it. Let them discover on their own that "their" chosen card (the Lovers gaff) is the only card out of all 22 cards (major arcana) that has a behind view perspective and vantage point. Obviously this routine idea, works best with participants who are either unfamilar with the Tarot or have very little knowledge and/or experience with it! ---------------------------------------- *Those who own and are proficient at performing both the Sanctum Sigil and Sanctum Room aspects of "Sanctum II" by Outlaw Effects should have no problem "remote viewing" the Lovers Card to a participant. If you own Sanctum II yet aren't confident with your Sanctum skills, then check out the S2 Forum for advanced techniques and a boatload of advice, tips, suggestions and hints. If you don't own Sanctum II, go buy it from Outlaw Effects! One of the most powerful pieces you can perform, if you're brave and bold enough! I know you are!
