I am getting more into Close-up mentalism and am turning my studies toward ESP cards. Just curious what your favorite routines are and where they can be learned? Appreciate any help you can share. Thanks.

I don't know how much this helps, but I always loved the routine that Derren used to do. I think it's advertised as Rhine's Revenge on Penguin. It combines two methods that most spectators are aware of, but when put together, they work like a charm.

I would imagine that if you searched a bit, you'd find this is a common topic, but here is one link I found...

Jarjarjared,
While I know that Rhines Revenge is currently available, this is EXACTLY the same as Jazz Mentalism on Michael Murray's excellent DVD "Submodalities". Michael's DVD is a ridiculously great value, considering all the routines that are included. Zener routines are a small subsection of mentalism, so it surprises me that RR ever got published. Jazz Mentalism was hidden in plain sight. I have nothing personally against Clint, but when producing a DVD some due diligence should be performed. This one was blatant in my opinion. There could be more to the story, but that is how it appears. |

It's also exactly the same as ESPionage by Charlie Frye... Which I don't own, but I've seen him teach it at lectures.
And if it is indeed the method Derren used then who deserves the original credit? |

Agree that the best methods usually involve the jazz. No point sticking to a framework when letting things take their course looks so much better.

Waters,
Thank you for informing me that this was not the original version of the effect. I do not own Rhine's Revenge, so I would not know whether he gave credit to anyone else. I did kind of assume that there had to be a previous product out there. |

Mine is the original classic premise: You hold up an ESP card with its back towards the spectator and they record their guess on a clipboard and the card is placed face down on a table. This is repeated 10, 12 or 20 times. When they call out their impressions in order, they have everyone right.

Chris- Don't you think it might be more believable if they got two or three guesses wrong?

Bob: You are correct, I usually do include a miss or two, as the mood strikes me.

I've done a similar effect but when the cards are shown at the end, it appears that every single guess was wrong. The performer acts puzzled and the "notices" something amazing- with the exception of one or two errors (including the first guess), the participant actually regularly PREDICTED the NEXT card that would be dealt to the table, thus exhibiting precognitive, rather than telepathic, ability. It's a little subtle and best for small groups- especially if they are sharp enough to notice it themselves.

I do not know the name of this routine but I love it very much and I do it when I am asked to do close-up shows.
https://youtu.be/Gd_yTKyMuts?t=42m44s This man's name is Ryo and he is the best Mentalist I have ever seen in Korea. Although he is the only professional Mentalist I have seen in Korea but he is really good and I like his persona and styles and everything. Can anyone tell me the name of this routine? or is this his original? |
