Hi guys! I've been into magic/mentalism for about 7 years now. I've had a fascination with magic ever since I was a kid but it wasn't until I saw the movie The Prestige that it really clicked into me. I read books and watched dvds and tried my best for about a year. Even though I had gained so much magic knowledge, I was just too clumsy to do card tricks or coin tricks so I about gave up on magic for good.
Then I saw a trailer on TV for a new show starring Keith Barry and it lit a fuse in me that has yet to die out. That was the first time I had ever seen hypnosis and mind reading and I was so excited that I had to learn it instantly. Googling led me to Derren Brown and he became my hero. Trying to figure out how he does all of his stuff has been the driving force of my research and magical journey this entire time and even though my mentalism library is huge and I've discovered thousands of amazing techniques, I still have no idea how he does my favorite tricks of his. I'll definitely be asking you guys to lead me to the correct sources because obviously I've been failing for years. I'm a natural at hypnosis, I've gotten my clinical hypnotherapy certification but conversational hypnosis is my specialty. Because of this, I prefer to do "psychological" mentalism. Meaning I prefer the body language reading "real" presentation so that I can interlace my mentalism feats with hypnosis fluidly. This doesn't give me tons of material to work with because I don't care for using excess props (i.e. billets which IMHO serve no purpose if you're a mind reader) or things like coins or playing cards that lead people to believe I'm a magician instead of a genuine mind reader just because of the connotation. I know this is probably a controversial methodology but it forms a distinct character that I would want to watch if I was a spectator. This is my first post here but I've been lurking for years off and on. I look forward to joining your community more intimately and becoming a frequent contributor. - browneyed |

Welcome browneyed,
There are quite a lot of Mental folks who hang out in the "Penny for Your Thoughts" forum. You'll find plenty of opinions there. I've always been interested in Hypnosis, as I'm sure many people are. Best luck, it sounds like a fun act. -Mary Mowder |
