I have a friend who HATES her jobs (she has several) and is jealous I have a fun job. I have been growing my business lately and my wife quit her job so she can help with the scheduling and book keeping. My friend got me thinking about what SHE could do to make some money and help me out. I'm not quite to the point to hire her straight out, but I thought she could do something I am not good at and don't want to do: Cold Calling. She could do it for a percentage.
I have 2 questions, If you were to hire a person on commission to grow your business, what would you have them do? If you had a laymen cold calling for you, what would you do to train them? What should they know? |

I would have them do Cold Calling, the title is self explanatory. At least 50 telephone calls a day and also Cold Calling on your target market in person if you have clients that can be sold in person.
Your second question, is something you should already know, she needs this information to sell your services. She needs to know what you offer. It is the old, Who, What, Where, and How information, so can sell you. Such as, Who are you, Who can use your service, Who are the people that will benefit most from your services, Who will be doing he services. Who will take care of the invitations, Who have you provided these services to before. What will the services be, What times are the services available, What will I be buying, What people most benefit from your services. How will you do this service, How will I feel about the service, How much will it cost me, How confident are you that the services will be satisfactory, How does your operation work. Where will the services be done, Where can I contact you or a representative. You can add many more questions to this list, it is only to give you and idea how you define your business and yourself for your Salesperson. |

To add to what Bill said,
Make sure you have a well written telephone script for her to follow. Have a separate sheet with all the answers to the questions Bill mentioned. Teach her to follow the script as much as possible, if she gets off get back to it as soon as possible. Tom

We have discussed this in-depth before. In order for this to even have a chance of working, there are crucial elements must be in place.
1.) A system 2.) A Process 3.) An Understanding Of Entertainment Business and Sales Having someone just make cold calls on your behalf will last less that a couple of weeks and likely yield little or no results. They need to be educated and properly trained with a system and direct process that is repeatable, scalable and proven to generate the exact results you are seeking. This reminds me of a similar situation when a member here was approached with someone wanting to represent him for bookings. Being a phone sales rep is quite similar to being a sales rep and this thread may answer and address many of your thoughts and questions. http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......um=44&22 |

Why not create an inbound marketing strategy?
Cold calling sucks for the caller and the person receiving the call. Josh London

I have shows coming in from websites and such, but I want this person (ironically named Magic) to look for events that might have hired me if they knew about me in the first place. I have been to events that have another magician or balloon artist or inflatable from out of town or whatever. I want Magic to find out events I'm willing to drive to and see if they need entertainment, or balloons or whatever and make a stranger aware that there is an entertainer down the road that can help with their event. Make cold calls into warm calls for me...

I would have her call people to cull out those who are interested. If they are interested, I would have her set up a phone appointment for you to speak to the prospect. In that way, you would only be talking to people who want shows, and you can go over all of the particulars . I would keep her her script VERY simple. The first sentence should be designed to peak their interest. All that she has to know is how long the show is, for what audience it's geared to, and what the general price ranges are. It's up to you to do the rest during your phone appointment.
This approach works in the real estate, insurance, and many other industries. |
