You don't actually do this for a living?
or it's variant: It's like a hobby right? That you can make a little extra money at? or this, My nephew does that one. You do it a little better though. (Just after you do one of the most amazing and amazingly difficult card routines ever devised.) How old is he? Oh, he's 12, but he's really smart. And, he does the exact routine I just performed? Well, not the exact one. In his he finishes with all the cards turning into the same card. (Sound of me the performer gasping for air.....)

Way worse is having a supportive wife and kids, and sometimes friends who like to tell every ventriloquist/ Balloon Twister/ magician/ comedian that you are one too...
Then the worse thing you can say is: "Hello" I can never tell who is the most unhappy. They're just trying to do their thing, I'm just trying to watch, now we have to behave like jungle cats not knowing who will strike first... Dammit, I just want to see you tie a balloon Mickey Mouse! I have to explain that I am none of those things, I just do a couple of things and I want to see them do their thing because it's their thing.
Magic is doing improbable things with odd items that, under normal circumstances, would be unnessecary and quite often undesirable.

With some practice you could go pro...

Would it be awful if at the end of the 21 card trick if they said "is this your card" and you replied "nope sorry that was not my card but it's okay maybe you missed a step you'll get it next time I'm sure" then make them sit there while you perform it for them?
Isn't "turnabout fair play?" |

The one thing I dislike is when they try to "solve" the trick before I even started it or when they give explanations that are completely off-mark. I'll be honest with you, most of the times I just want to scream "STOP THAT AND JUST ENJOY THE SHOW, ***IT! I WANT YOU TO BE ENTERTAINED AND YOU'RE NOT HELPING!". That's why effects like Designer for Laugh and Dunbury Aces (which I don't know, but I need to one day) appeals to me a lot (and I like the plot as an spectator, but would be the kind of guy who tells the magician he messed up).
In Bill Malone's performance of 21 card trick in youtube there's a comment with a guy "explaining" how he did it. I'll code it to avoid exposure, but the guy explains that Malone just mark the thought-of-card using the aid of an assistant stripper. I wonder in what youtube video I can learn where to manipulate a thought of card without touching the deck because if I could do that I could fool anyone I wanted. About spectators who want to show magicians stuff: I have a friend who have an interest in magic and, besides being a friendly and good person, he learns his effects from youtube. I'm slowly convincing him to get Royal Road like I did, but turns out he fries people more often than I do (which means he's naturally better than I am, not that youtube is better than royal road). Anyway, he have a spelling effect that involves "randomly" dealing cards face up in different piles, then gathering it all and spelling to it. He get great reactions from this alone. If he were to show a pro this one them he would probably be like "oh, okay", yet he layman like it. So I guess this is the reasoning normal people About offers of free shows: Check this comment in reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/AskReddit/comme....../cgg4l0y |

Wife roling her eyes when you approach her with a deck of cards.
As a tribute to Harry Lorayne "You know how difficult it is to fool your wife - if you can get her to pick a card in the first place."
It takes a baby in the belly six months to learn how to put the thumb in the mouth.
The rest of life is essentially the same problem. |
