John Racherbaumer's new Flibberty Gibberty column on the Conjuring Arts website is a nice essay about Chicago bar magician Matt Schulien:
http://conjuringarts.org/2015/08/flibber......rbaumer/ Some solid advice and performance and misdirection.
It's still magic even if you know how it's done.

Djtrouten:
Nice post....thank you, and welcome to the Magic Café. I had the distinct priviledge of meeting and seeing Matt Schulien work in November of 1965, when I was 17 years old. By that time. I had been a performing magician since I was 8 years old, was born and raised in St. Louis and was "under the wing" of some of the St. Louis greats... When I saw Matt Schulien "do his thing"... I was BLOWN AWAY by the sheer power of the reactions of the people he was entertaining......they were literally howling with laughter and having the time of their lives being entertained by Matt.........it FOREVER changed my approach to performing Magic. Here's what I learned watching Matt Shulien.....It's not THE TRICK...it's THE PERFORMER and his PERFORMANCE that makes all the difference in the World when you perform Magic. In opther words, if people like YOU.....they will like what YOU DO! Matt had a "bigger than life" way about him...his charming and engaging personality kept his audiences WANTING MORE.... No fancy, schmancy moves with Matt...just guts, timing, misdirection, and most of all CHARM.......I'll take those odds any day! |
