Curious....Please chime in if your ring has grown in attendance (better measurement than membership) in the last few years. If so, what do you attribute it to? Please share your success stories!

Check with the Ring in Vancouver, BC. They have a lot of great ideas that have made them probably the fastest-growing Ring in the world.

Ring 9 in Atlanta is another to observe. At Monday's meeting we had 18 member and 8 visitors! The leadership there is fantastic!

Strong innovative leadership and active, motivated members are the keys to a strong Ring. Keep meetings on consistent nights - the same day each month. Bouncing it around confuses members and a confused member can quickly become an inactive member. Keep things moving - little to no business, all fun and sharing. Maintain a variety of activities - this way everyone has some part of the meeting to look forward to. Extend the fellowship beyond the meeting with a late-night dinner or pub visit. Listen carefully to member comments, complaints, and suggestions - ignore them at your own peril.

I would love to hear ideas from people growing their rings. My ring in Lafayette, Indiana has been struggling the past several years, but the members are working to bring it back.
One idea we had was joining our local county arts association, to help get our name out there. (Done, and done.) Next month, a couple of us are planning on running a magic workshop at the Arts Federation a few days before our meeting. So... if they like coming to the workshop on Monday, we can recruit them for the meeting on Thursday. Will that work? We don't know. But we would like to expand beyond our 10 member minimum!

Attendance at our Ring varies a lot, and has seen a slow steady decline.
In the city of Magifest you would think our ring would be larger. The business meetings are short, about five minutes, and the rest of the time is used for magic. Since I am the secretary I like to read the ring reports and look for ideas for our club. |

I'm with you, Steve. The Ring and Assembly Reports in The Linking Ring and M-U-M offer a smorgasbord of ideas, programs, and opportunities. I used to bypass all but my own club's report. Now, I read each and every one taking notes as I go. There really are some brilliant ideas being shared in them and no one seems to notice.

Skip, I'm way behind on reading ring and assembly reports. Once the snow starts and it's too cold to go outside I'll catch up.

At the Hollywood ring we have good attendance. I don't know if we are growing or evolving. We've had a few members die or become inactive due to health and we've had some new people join. We have a really good mix of amateurs and professionals. My job is sergeant at arms, but my real job is to put a stop to anything that doesn't get us back to fun and performing as quickly as possible.
The best thing a ring can do is allow members to show their stuff and just have fun. KJ |

I agree KJ.
We try to keep the business meeting to five minutes or less. Then we preform magic in two categories, closeup and standup. The members also vote for each effect on a scale of 1 to 10. At the end of the year the member with the most points in each category is awarded Magician of the year in that category. Attached is a sample ballot. The ballots we hand out at the meeting already have the members names filled in. Steve Click here to view/download attached file. |

Now this is a really great thread of passionate folks working to improve things and open to new ideas. I'd say this speaks very well of IBM and at least some of it's members and leadership.
It'll be interesting to see what's happening at my local ring.
Magic is believing in yourself. If you can do that, you can make anything happen.

When I first began attending my local IBM ring only a few years ago as an adult hobbyist I wasn't really sure what to expect. Here are some things that encouraged me to join and keep coming back:
-several high-quality lectures each year -low annual dues -a diverse membership (pros, amateurs, older, younger, etc.) -good meeting location that's not difficult to get to, has parking, enough seating space for everyone in attendance, and not much interference from lay persons who might be using the same building at the same time -encouragement and enthusiastic support of members when they perform at meetings; no pressure for members who prefer not to perform -great learning opportunities for beginners -an informative and useful monthly newsletter |
