I just stupidly dropped a UK 2 pence ] on my hard kitchen floor and one edge has slightly bent inwards. It still fits but it sticks and I have to use some blu-tac or sticky tape on either side to pull them apart. Is it fixable and if so what is the best method? Any advice gratefully received.

Down and dirty method:
Holding the "coin" on it's side, bent edge to the table, with a round eraser-less pencil (or dowel rod), work the bend out of the edge by rotating the "round rod" back and forth over the inside edge of the "coin" at the bend. Use care as not to throw the coin out of round on either side of the bend. If you do, place another coin inside and reform the edge using the coin as a form. FWIW

Take a small diameter wooden dowel, an place it on the end inside the coin. Slowly and lightly run the side of the dowel against the inside edge of the coin. Do not use much pressure. Check after each treatment if the insert will release freely. If not repeat. Then insert the insert and work the insert back and forth, as you hold the push the coin against a flat vertical surface, like the back of a kitchen sink counter top. You can also roll the coin with insert on a flat surface. Just don't get in a rush. Don't apply to much pressure. Take you time, and be gentle.
Much depends on who badly it is dented. |

As a word of warning to any budding ] users out there, this experience has taught me that the downside of having a well-matched ] and insert is that the slightest malformation can make it stick so do try not to drop the ] and stay away from hard surfaces as much as you can! This is Peter Nardi's excellent version of hopping halves which I've been carrying and performing ever since I got it a couple of weeks ago. I'm glad I didn't discover the dent while I was actually doing the trick! |

Finally found time to try the pencil method. It worked a treat. Thanks again to everyone.
