I have just upgraded from a Fantasio to a metal cane. I am having a problem with the top of the cane not settling properly on opening. This will obviously give away the the secret if I do it in performance. Has anyone else had the same problem and is there a cure?
thanks in advance

What do you mean 'settle properly'?
If you mean, the curl steel is partially unrapped. Send it back for a new one. If your cane has textured tape like bandage adhesive tape. replace it with smooth plastic tape. |

Be careful not to point that at someone's forehead when letting it go!
Sometimes just after I oiled mine, appearing cane, with WD40 it would open too fast and the end would have a loose loop. I try to set the prop while twisting both hands, but do not allow too much slack in the coil. It should settle down with some use, and wipe excess oil from it if it is very slick. There is a balance point between opening too fast and not opening all the way. Are you doing it with a silk? It will also slow down the cane enough to allow proper final appearance.
Nothing would get done at all, if man waited so long that no one could find fault with it.

I have found it is important to store them rolled up to keep them 'snappy'

Wen I first got my canes, I had the same problem getting the cap on. Try extending the cane more by starting at the bottom and extend a short section as far out as possible then twist it tight then do another section, and so forth until it is really long. It's a matter of finding the right length and starting at the bottom.

DenDowhy,
We are discussing the Appearing Cane, not the Vanishing Cane. |

Opps, Well it's a case of reading to fast. Yes I had this same problem, that is why I no longer use the plastic APPEARING cane. I use only the spring steel canes, and I have at least a half-dozen. Four old er Walsh canes and two newer canes, and a bag of steel canes I haven't opened since I bought them at an auction.

I remember my first metal appearing cane. I was practicing it at my friends house and I was learning how to let it fly..... well it deffinetly put a mark on the ceiling which is still there today.
I thought I would put this trick on the Café to see if anyone could ever use it. I had shared it with Karrell Fox many years ago back in Ks. In fact, when he heard the idea he told me to write magic books. I was told years later that he doesn't tell anyone to write books but I'm working on the book and how I want it to be presented but heres the trick that I shared with Karrel: Fireball to Cane!!! Magician steps forward, after some other magic nonsense lol, and approches a lit candle. Touching the flame he creates a fireball which he then tosses upward and outward to the audience. The fireball visablly transforms into a appearing cane. Its simple to do this. Do this with the metal canes and not the plastic. Ill warn ya that you will destroy your good canes, over time, doing this but it catches people off guard with it. You attact to the cane a peice of black or dark brown string. How much or how long? Well that depends on the person. I would normally have a peice of string that would allow me to stretch my arms out a bit to show nothing there. I would normally wear my tux with this to use the obvious black art with it to hide the string. The string is connected to the cane where you would normally attach the silk. The other end of the string would be attached to a full sheet of flash paper. You would crumble up the sheet to create what I would describe as air pockets. This seems to really help things out when it burns. You have the paper ball in one hand the string stretched between the two hands and the cane in the other hand. Now, if I havent totally confused ya then you go up to a candle or a source of heat or flame and you create your fireball by touching the flashpaper to the flame. Obviously this will burn quickly, so you toss the fireball upward and a split second later you will bring up the other arm and just release the cane. By release I mean that it is already uncocked and you just quickly open your hand to let it expand and then quickly close your hand to show that the cane has magically appeared. What this looks like to the audience is that you just had a fireball transform into a sturdy cane. It happens very quickly but its a startling transformation. When the book comes out this will deff be in the book. Hope you guys can use it or it helps out with a new and different aspect using the metal cane. I would normally clean the cane or lubricate using WD40 after several uses of it. Like I said you'll ruin the cane because you'll burn the finish off the inside and it will rust if you aren't careful. The treatment will just slow the demise of the cane a bit. Anyhoooo hope it helps someone looking for something new. Magically, Robert Long |

Robert...... I don't understand why you would need string attached to the cane... just ignite the flash paper and reach into the "flame area" and produce the cane.
Another idea is to have a straw attached to the cane. I have attached a small pin to the straw. Have a balloon in other hand and bounce on the straw a few times... then break balloon with the pin... and at the same time release the cane... Cane from Balloon!! |

Cat26,
The reason for the string is that the cane actually pulls the fireball into the cane giving the appearance that the cane was transforming out of the fireball. The action is fast so there really is no time to make a jerky move to reach into a fireball. The way that I wrote is the way that I have done it. I just thought of something else though. When you measure the string out make sure that it is just slightly less than the length of the cane. It does look great on stage and you don't have to make jerky moves to accomplish the effect. Any other ideas of items to change into an appearing cane other than a silk or ribbon?
