What exactly is slush powder, and can I purchase some cheaper than through a magic dealer?

I am told that it's the material used in disposable diapers for infants. Perhaps someone can give "us" the exact chemical name.

The material in disposable diapers works perfectly, and will be cheaper. Another alternative is to get the flaky paste that wallpaperers uses (the dry stuff, before you add water) and run it through a blender to make it into a fine powder. That will work equally well, and way cheaper.

Thanks Tony....
I had not heard of the wallpaper paste. I don't usually use liquids, except for the TipCee Bottle--and, that mainly for high school and college groups, but, this goes into the "useful info. file". BTW... I liked very much your "6 card repeat" and "cards across" video. (Not just the routines, but, your personality and presentation!)

Its a polymer called Sodium Polyacrylate. The best place I have found to get it is a 1lb bag from Steve Spangler for $25.

As Daniel mentioned, Sodium polyacrylate is a polymer that absorbs from 200 to 1000 times its weight in water. It is better known to magicians as ‘slush powder’. This powder instantly turns a liquid into a solid.
It's also commonly used in diapers and incontinence underpants. From Wiki: Sodium polyacrylate and other derivatives of polyacrylic acid have a wide variety of commercial and industrial uses that include: Sequestering agents in detergents. By binding hard water elements such as calcium and magnesium, the surfactants in detergents work more efficiently. Thickening agents Coatings Artificial snow Laundry detergent Disposable diapers Potted plants Bath time recreational gel (such as Gellibaff or Squishybaff) Super absorbent polymers. These cross-linked acrylic polymers are referred to as "Super Absorbents" and "Water Crystals", and are used in diapers.[1] Copolymer versions are used in agriculture and other specialty absorbent applications. The origins of super absorbent polymer chemistry trace back to the early 1960s when the U.S. Department of Agriculture developed the first super absorbent polymer materials.[2] This chemical is featured in the Maximum Absorbency Garment used by NASA. And here's another fun fact: According to a couple of the brain-boys at M.I.T., If a large enough amount of slush powder were to be dumped on top of a hurricane, the storm would break up completely! Youd need 10 or 12 c-100 Hercules' or maybe 10 B-52's modified for higher altitudes, the cost including the fuel and pay for the aircraft would be approximately 87 million, and then theres the question of whether you want that slush chemical falling into the ocean in massive quantities.....
Everybody wants to beleive.....we just help them along.
