How about an area of the Café reserved just for hobbyist Amatuer magicians to talk about their experience of magic? Perhaps next to the new to magic area?

I don't want to bump, but any feedback on this suggestion?

We don't restrict any forum to a select group of people so no reservations will be made. However, the topic you are looking for is the "what happened was this" which is a discussion area about experiences in magic.

Thanks for the feedback.
I didn't really mean to limit it as in historical experience only - I was really thinking of amateur magic as something discrete and different to professional - the issues surrounding it etc. In the same way the 'New to Magic' area is aimed at beginners, and 'Penny...' is aimed at mentalism etc. |

I understand but again, since we don't restrict access to one type of performer, there is nothing stopping the experienced magician or professional from posting in that area. That's why I suggested the "what happened was this" forum. That area is open to all to post suggestions or comments. Amateurs talking to amateurs results in amateur thinking. The comments of seasoned professional or experienced magicians could be very helpful and inciteful.

Yes, I understand that there would be nothing stopping a professional posting in an amatuer focussed area, just as there's nothing stopping a clown posting in Penny or stopping a pro posting in New to Magic, but the idea was to have an area focussed upon the particular trials and tribulations faced by amateurs that professionals do not face. The 'what happened ...' section does not have amatuer Magic as its primary focus.
Consider such an amatuer section as something akin to the 'New to magic...' area, only not limited to the inexperienced. And yes, I totally would want the input of professionals if and when they have something insightful to add to a discussion concerning amatuer Magic. |

Hi, this might be difficult to do but I think it would be very useful and interesting if there was a section where you could look at top viewed or hottest forums/topics.
Many thanks, Jim |

That would also restrict members from going to the specific forums we have set up. In other words, presently someone interested in coin magic can go to those forums and read regardless of the popularity. If it were moved to a top viewed forum, that member would have to search through it to find what they were looking for. You can always subscribe to a topic if you are specifically interested in it.

How I was imagining it was to keep the current main page, as I agree it is a very good way to find what you are looking for, but to also have a section where you can see this weeks top viewed topics (similar to Reddit).
Many thanks, Jim |

That would violate our rules about having the same post in multiple forums. It would be difficult to control a forum of top viewed. Many topics are viewed without response. Viewing a topic doesn't mean it is the most popular. For example, let's say we get 5 new members who are interested in coin magic. They each go to the coin forum to check it out. That would automatically increase the views by at least 5 but it doesn't mean they are the most popular.
Another situation that would skew such a forum is the number times a mod visits that forum for routine maintenance such as spelling, grammar while looking for rules violations. Each visit by the mod would increase the number of views. We appreciate the suggestion but the format of the Café is the best at this time.

To go back to Terrible Wizard's original suggestion, I could see the value in a forum that focused on amateur magic performance. The Café currently has forums for different performance venues (table-hopping, street magic, stage, television, children's parties) and the different audiences these venues present (diners, strangers on a street, paid audience members, children). Most Café members probably perform most of their magic in casual settings for family, friends and colleagues. A forum devoted to the discussion of the particular challenges and opportunities faced by amateur performers could be valuable. It wouldn't be so much about the performer's experience level (as in "New to Magic"). Instead, it would be about the audience and venue (friends and family, casual setting). I don't think there's an existing forum that really addresses this most common of performing situations.
It's still magic even if you know how it's done.

Very interesting perspectives. Oddly enough, I guess I would like to see kind of the opposite. I'd like to see a section for working professionals. So many working pros can often get frustrated by the basics and often argumentative and challenging content by hobbyists and amateurs. It seems it eventually drives many of them away (although I suspect many still lurk).
When Steve used to have the special guests of the month it often had the feel of a pro sharing. A forum or section exclusive to this level of members this could both bring some pros back and could could be something others may strive toward. It could also likely target some higher end advertisers and supporters. I have always found that many pros are often very keen to share more and open up when they are among peers (just as amateurs are likely more comfortable and less intimidated among their peers as well). |

Mindpro -- The idea of a section just for working professionals is interesting, but would probably be very challenging to police.

Jim -- One thing you can do is click the "Mark all forums as read" button. Once you've done that, all of the forums will be marked with a white coffee cup on a saucer. When somebody posts something new, the icon for the forum they post in will change to a red cup. This makes it easy to locate active topics with new posts. (Please note that you can't undo this, so be sure you want to mark all forums as read before you do this. You will still be able to read old posts, but they won't stand out any longer.)
It's still magic even if you know how it's done.

This has been a very interesting discussion to follow. I can easily see both sides of the issue.
On one hand, part of the 'magic' (forgive the pun) of this collection of Foru is the diversity of talent, experience, topics and background. At the same time there are some 'pockets' within the craft of Prestidigitation that are a little esoteric. Either by region, country, level of skill OR choice of vocation. As a lifetime-non-professional I would petition for something akin to what Terrible Wizard initially proposed. As a compromise to the divided opinions let me suggest this; As part of the 'signature' line, each of us can indicate whether we are PROFESSIONAL (meaning you derive at-least-some of your income from magic) or HOBBYIST (indicating you perform solely for the love of the craft and the act of performing). |
