While I'm quite comfortable with the magic itself, I was wondering if any of you have experienced someone stealing your bags or something like that? I don't mean your magic props but your bags, cases etc. I'm a bit worried because I don't have eyes on my back and therefore I can't wacth my stuff all the time. Are you worried about your bags or do you have great tips on how to secure them? I have only busked a couple of times so my experiences are limited...

Most of my busking is local to where I live and everything is contained in the case that I work from. Anything else is left in the car. Not sure what I'd do if I was living out of a backpack that I had to carry with me to the busking location. Not sure this is helpful, other than to suggest making your case that you carry part of what you are working with and not something to be sitting behind you or off to the side.

For security I use a bungy cord threaded through two or three [handles etc.] bits of gear. Then if someone grabs one of them they would find it attached to the others, making it hard to snatch and run. Better still, use a bicycle lock that has a long tough cable on about a yard or more of wire ripe. It's hard to run off with a group of objects linked as I have described.

If your hanging with other buskers 9 -10 time there keep an eye on your stuff. Also keep your kit down to the minum.
Also if this is something your just fearing its probably not as a bad as you think. Just keep an eye like you normally would. Maybe a lock and chain is worthwhile. But I personally have very little to no issues.
Enjoy your magic,

Having a noise alarm is not really a solution. Imagine, somebody grabs your gear and runs and the siren goes off. So what do you do?
Run after him and leave your gear at your pitch out in the open while you try to catch the thief? Or stay with the bulk of your gear and money and be glad you at least have that?

I am not so sure that the average street thief has any interest in stealing a buskers magic props. I do know that the average street thief realizes that a busker (at least the good ones)will have untraceable amounts of cash on them, or near them. A local street performer I know was robbed by several teenagers this past Summer...they were not after his linking rings, but the cash they witnessed him collect after passing the hat. My friend was also beaten very badly and was unable to perform for several weeks due to the injuries. As a full time busker, he had no insurance and the hospital bills totaled to almost three times what he makes in an average YEAR!

Good point, peppermeat2000. I had forgotten that we magicians put value on our props [cost, history, ability to work well]
that 'ordinary' people regard as just 'things', of no practical use to them even, perhaps, as keepsakes.

Thank you everybody for your replies! This far I've alsod worked with only a table (dj-hero stand discussed in another thread) but if I have to take a bigger bag with me I will probably take a bike lock with me and lock all my bags to the table.
Good to hear that most of you haven't have big problems with thieves

Now think about the response to that in this day and age if someone who doesn't want to steal your case nonetheless sees a case with a wire hanging out of it. Hilarity will NOT ensue, trust me.

One of the last living 10-in-one performers. I wanted to be in show business the worst way, and that was it.
