A new book is coming out that looks very promising. Patrick Redford's website is now featuring Andy Luttrell's Psychology for the Mentalist. The promotional material says that Luttrell is a PhD student in Social Psychology and an effective performer. The book draws from a range of insights with Social Psychology in ways that can, indeed, inform what we do in preparing and performing Mentalism effects.
Insights from Social Psychology have, so far, been underrepresented in the literature informing Mentalism. Our existing lore features themes like perception, memory, NLP, and nonverbal communication, but has been thin on the dynamics of how people think, process, experience, and respond in social settings. Luttrells's book promises to provide that missing link. My own background in Communication Studies, several decades ago, involved fairly extensive reading in Social Psychology, so when I received Patrick's email about the book's forthcoming publication, I was eager to check it out. I can report, from what Patrick provided, that the Table of Contents promises a very thorough text. And from the preview pages that are available, the book should be readable and interesting, with the theories and insights well taught, with useful suggestions and applications to performance mentalism. The book will retail for $35.00. Right now, one can preorder the book for $28.00. You can thank me later! George |

I was able to read an early copy. This is fantastic for those looking for genuine psychology and its application in mentalism.

A very good book. I read the stuff of Cialdini, which is also mentioned in the book, and went about putting it to work and here is the perfect synthesis of research results into application. Just what the doctor ordered.
I'd rather be read than (w)ri(gh)t(e)

One of the (few) effects I carry in my wallet comes from this book. And in addition to effects I use, the book also contains brilliant background information.

I teach communication and perception in university and many of the topics touched in this book are already part of my class. Very interesting! Waiting for a couple of reviews but I think it's something different worth buying.

In addition to two (authentic) effects I use regularly from the book, I gained a lot of valuable insights. A fascinating, instructive read.

Shipping costs killed it for me too. Over $30 to Canada.

I just ordered this book and expect to receive it within the week. I took advantage of Penguin's free shipping to Canada by adding a couple of items to bring the total up to $60. I realize this way of purchasing isn't for everyone but it is one way of avoiding the shipping cost.

Am now more than halfway through and thoroughly enjoying this. Although the psychological forces and false memory demonstrations are intriguing, I have particularly enjoyed the section on lying and truth telling.
