I have not seen this device used, and I have not used a topit before. To be completely honest, I am not 100% sure what a topit is. The effects that are possible from the description at http://www.kjmagic.com/catalog/effects01.html
sounds quite impressive. Has any of you guys had experience with this in close-up/restaurant situations? I am very interested so if any of you have any comments it would be greatly appreciated! |

I am currently having a topit installed in my jacket...I may get a vest one as well for summer but....I am concerned about looking unprofessional without my jacket...
The last thing you ever expected, should have been the first.

I have seen Dan Sylvester himself use it at the MAES convention. I DO NOT like it. I use Ammar's topit pattern in my jacket and it's WONDERFUL. The suspended dimension flashes pretty bad when it's opened and it doesn't look natural. Whereas a regular topit is completely concealed and never has to open up. Do yourself a favor, buy cloutier or Ammar's topit pattern for like $5 then buy either Ammar's Topit DVD or Topiting Made Easy by Carl Cloutier. Once you learn topit work you'll use it all of the time.

So basically it is some kind of pattern that you sew onto the outside of your jacket to make secret ditches etc? I typically wear a vest when I perform, does topit work perform just as well in a vest? Do you guys prefer the Ammar or Cloutier topits/patterns?
Does that pattern you buy have to match your clothing somehow? |

I have used Ammars for about twelve years. I am unfamiliar with the Cloutier pattern but I do know that Ammars work just great. One word of advice, when you realize the power of the utility there may be a temptation to over use it. I think it it best used for subtle purposes like switching and ditching. It cannot be denied though that some vanishes look pretty darn amazing, just use them discerningly.

Since you're looking at the Topit for use in a restaurant environment, Michael Ammar has a video, Magic, Mastery and You, where he shows you how to produce a bottle of champagne from a silk...very magical.

So all of you guys think getting The Ammar Topit, an Ammar Topit tape, and his book Magic, Mastery and You is good?

Brian-
Get Ammar's topit and have it installed. But I will agree with Chappy that its effectiveness is it's downfall with newer topiter's as they tend to try to use it in every trick or effect. Used Subtley and dicreetly,it is a very powerful utility device. I too like Ammars, although I will be honest and tell you that I have not seen nor used the other topit that you spoke of. The one advantage that Ammar's topit has is that you can retrieve from the outer pocket and it also has a well thoughtout addition to avoid overthrow. Also for any of you that care to try to find out a little more about vest topits... I remember speaking to Scotty York a number of years ago and he told me about a vest topit he once made a long time ago. I don't know if he ever marketed it or wrote it up anywhere, but it sounded pretty interesting to me at the time.Perhaps you may still find out about it somewhere in a lecture note or something.Sorry, but that is all the info I have on it. Carl Cloutier's topic is also great...the difference between the two is Carl runs a shop that sells fine mens clothing ...so his topit is geared towards fitting into the fabric of nice clothing...both his an Ammar's are wonder and the toppit is a great utility when used correctly. So don't be afraid on either one you get...both are of equal value...but as I mentioned Carl does know clothing so it is very easy for a good steamstress to figue how to utilize Carl's pattern

I second that idea of "not topiting everything". Same goes for sleeving. Use it for switching and not direct vanishes. Or if you are using a topit for a direct vanish make sure it's done on the off beat during a "magical gesture".

Find a copy of Ammars Toppit book, he goes into some great details that the cloutier videos do not. I can not comment on Michaels dvd but I believe it may be a repeat of the effects in the book.

Jay Scott Berry's topit is excellent. It has some big advantages over the others.
For one thing, you can't miss with it or overshoot it. OTOH, with proper technique you shouldn't have that problem anyway.
