This is a great thread! I'm also in my thirties, and just getting into magic. I've been an actor/comedian for a couple of years so that's definitely helped, but it's definitely intimidating to tackle all of the technique. It's helped me to take it one step at a time, and just focus on the basics. I figure I can get a lot of effects out of a couple of techniques, and the rest is personality. Here's to us late bloomers!

Hi all. I thought I was really late to the party! I was a strong enthusiast in my youth, by the time I started college I had a pretty solid rep of card sleights and close-up bits. Now, in my thirties, I've picked it back up again, but with a completely different focus. I truly admire the performers who started young but after this thread I'm thinking, maybe there's an advantage too, coming at it with more life behind us.
Also, the tech and innovations are truly stunning right now. Seems like a good time to do this stuff, no matter what age you are! Thanks for the encouragement! ~Dave |

I started in my late 30s, working with my kids (9 and 7), so they'll have a huge head start, relatively speaking. It started with their interest, and I initially got dragged along, but found I really enjoyed it. It's been a lot of fun learning with them and developing our act as a family.

Well, I got interested in my 'late 8s', and, started doing shows in my "mid 13s". My first two shows (except for my own school)I made $3.00 (each). A few months later (October 24, >1945<) I had the chutzpah to book a show at the local Jr. H.S. I was almost 14. I played the JrHigh on percentage, and made $26.00. I did 30 minutes. I became a part time professional THAT DAY. Soon, I was playing every service club, PTA meeting, church group in the area.
I was a part time pro, throughout my four year Navy enlistment, my college years, and, a few years as District Executive for the Boy Scouts. Then, I "went" full time, and, never looked back. I'm retired, after about 50 years on the road, playing school assemblies all over the USA. If I could, I would do it again! I think I just hi jacked the thread!

Dick, when you've been in the magic game for over 70 years, you're allowed to hi jack any thread you want, any time you want, for any reason you want! haha (Besides, I started the thread, and you are my mentor, so I can't see anything wrong with it)

I too am a late bloomer. Loved it all my life but just started really getting involved a few years ago. Now I find myself living in an entertainment centric city so hopefully at some point I will be able to start performing on a regular basis for an audience other than my wife and children. Although they are a great audience.

I joined my local magic club when I was 35.
I did obtain a good magic book when I was 19 that taught some intermediate level techniques and tricks. My performance of magic soon phased out when I had performed the four or five good tricks in it to my friends and family (within about 6 months in other words, so aged 19/20). A chance encounter with a magician, at work of all places, when I was 35 encouraged me to join the local magic club at that time at his instigation. At this point aged 35 until I was 38 at the club I was way too lacking in confidence (magic-wise) to perform to the public (and also to my fellow magicians) but I eventually pushed myself to perform at some charity events for the magic club at aged 38 (about 3 years into my membership). From 38 therefore I did 3 charity close up gigs a year for the magic club. These gigs were so infrequent and so widely spaced apart that I always felt rusty and nervous before each gig(!) With the internet and magic videos & dvds having taken off at this time - and the Magic Café - I read & watched as much as I could about restaurant gigs - and obtained my first residency aged 48. I felt I needed regular work to make me a better performer. It was the making of me... my 'performance muscles' toned up and I got much sharper and much better. After 3 months of working every week I finally began to feel comfortable in my magic skin. Haven't looked back since. That was 8 years ago. Have been semi-pro ever since and since taking early retirement from my day job just over a year ago, I have been full time (or thereabouts!) That's my journey in a nutshell. Lots more details within all this, but the above more or less gives the gist of it all. Enjoy your journey! Any questions/advice, just ask. Good luck.

Thanks Race, enjoy YOUR journey and I hope you have a fantastic time!
(It really did take me TEN years to really get moving in terms of performing regularly; i.e starting to perform at 38, but only really doing so a reasonable /regular amount when I was 48! Wow, that's slow but I'm happy! It was the right journey for me.) All the best again and good luck!
