Hey guys! I'm a novice to magic, but a relative vet in comedy. That means my stage presence is pretty solid, but I still have a lot to learn as far as technique is concerned. I've been trying to put a mentalism show, but I'm having a hard time balancing the mystery of mentalism with the comedic theme that I want the show to have. I'm making sure to pick effects that I can do well, and that are legitimately impressive. I'm just writing some patter that will also make people laugh. Does anyone have any experience doing something similar? I'd love the feedback! Thanks in advance.

It would depend a lot on your comic style. Comedy has such a broad range. I've done a few mental effects in comedy format. My style is more in the sudden turn type of humor. I look for elements in the patter that I can take for a sudden turn. If you don't understand the idea of a sudden turn, it is exemplified in the old joke. How do you keep from Losing in Las Vegas? As soon as you get off the plane walk right into the propeller.
You suddenly take it in an unexpected direction. In a lot of ways that is a sort of an aside humor. It really has little to do with the effect or the actual patter, but a sort of aside comment on your own patter. I found that sort of humor worked well with patter in mentalism effects. It didn't lose the audience and in some ways appealed to their own subconscious stream of thought and comment on what they were observing.

LOL, like what change the misspelling of my name? Besides, both my grammars have been dead a long time.

Haha sorry sir, that was totally autocorrect. I apologize profusely, Father Photius. It seems the machines won today. Here's to tomorrow!

I use the Amazing Mind Reading Orange in my show quite often. It is a combo of comedy, "sort of" mentalism and magic. I think it's strong, and it never fails to get laughs.
Much of the comedy in this one is a bit corny...but when done correctly, gets big laughs. You sound like you have the comedy/acting chops already...technique on this one is pretty simple, and--as I said--it plays well.
