Being inspired by the new trick handlings in Tenyoism, thought it might be fun to share any other Tenyo “Mash-Ups” here. This could be examples of combining elements from different Tenyo effects to create a new effect or enhance the existing effect. Or combining a Tenyo effect with another non Tenyo effect to create something cool. Please do not share existing ideas that are highlighted in Tenyoism as those should remain proprietary with that publication unless Richard or the Creator wants to share something.

I will kick off with a little idea that I enjoy doing. I will call this:

Dicey Crash Dice:

A “Mash-Up” of Tenyo’s “Crash Dice” by Sawa and Daryl’s “Dicey Dots” Daryl’s effect is essentially causing the spots on a die to apparently transfer onto a plain white stick that was shown blank. Great little effect but combining it with Crash Dice makes it even more visual and removes the basic sleight of hand required in the original handling.

The die shell for Tenyo’s Crash Dice fits perfectly over the blank die in the Dicey Dots set. Note that in many of the “rip-off versions” of Crash Dice the shell is black with white spots and will not work for this effect… as always stick with the original Smile Place the shell over the blank die and place it in the Crash Dice jar with the lid on.

This is displayed in one hand while the “blank” white stick is displayed in the other. Tap the stick on the jar while at the same time giving the jar a quick shake and the spots will instantly vanish on the die and appear on the stick. (owners of both tricks will know what is going on here). Blank die is dumped out and both the die and stick can be examined.

A fun combination if you happen to own both effects. I believe Daryl has discontinued Dicey Dots but it can still be located online.

I have a couple of other fun Dice combos I will share later.

Cheers,
John

My mind always comes back to new uses for the board used in 'The Anti-Gravity Rock' by Lubor Fiedler.

One idea would be to use 'Tensegrity' by Patrick Snowden . Rest the cards on the board and then finish by showing that the cards are also apparently floating above the board. 'Tensegrity' can be found in the 'Art of Astonishment' books by Paul Harris. And on the Paul Harris 'True Astonishments' DVD.

Another idea is to balance a coke can (which is still about a third full) on the board. That should make a nice effect as well.

Well done with the thread. It is a great topic to explore!

Thanks Joe for jumping in. Some neat ideas with the board used in 'The Anti-Gravity Rock' by Lubor Fiedler! Was not familiar with that soda can stunt.

Here is a Dice/Tenyo “Mash-Up” I have had fun with…. Will call this:

Squeeze Die Shocker:

Needed: Two “coasters” from Tenyo’s Squeeze Play, the larger outer capsule from Tenyo’s Time Capsule and two dice from the marketed effect “Dice Illusion 2” (version of Lubor’s Shock Die) Below is a video for Dice Illusion 2 effect:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G7ztik_vLhc

You are essentially going to perform Tenyo’s Squeeze Play with two of the dice from Illusion Dice (the blank die and “Shocker Die”. The effect is the blank die is examined and then put between the two coasters which are rested on top of the vial from Time Capsule. Perform Squeeze Play and it appears the Blank Die has penetrated through the coaster into the vial. Wave you hand over the die in the vial, dump it out and spots instantly appear on the die! Nice kicker to Squeeze Play! With a little management you can have the spectator dump out the die as well. The Time Capsule vial keeps the die perfectly positioned.

Conveniently the blank die and “shocker” die in the Dice Illusion effect are magnetic, providing the perfect props for this variant on Tenyo’s Squeeze Play. It can be done in reverse and have the spots disappear when the die penetrates through the coasters but to me that screams switch. My original thought of having the blank die penetrate and then the spots appear I think is more subtle and surprising.

If you have the props, give it a try!

Cheers,

John

Anyone have tips on best way to make the modification to Crystal Cleaver per the Shimizu/Kaufman handling? X-acto? Dremel? Would love to make the modification but worried I'm just going to ruin it trying to do so.

I discovered that soda can stunt one day at school.

None of my friends believed I had just invented it.

Recently - I saw a video where you balance the can off the edge of a glass. I wanna' try that some time...

Let's look at 'Blue Crystal' by Lubor Fiedler. When I first saw adverts for the trick I thought the coin melted into the board and then disappeared.

The disappearance is not something that happens with this trick. So - I wonder if it is worth trying to add it to the trick?

How about we use a gaffed coin set called 'Coin Unique'? We then use a magician's force to make one of the coins them vanish.

And then make the coin vanish as both coins seem to penetrate the surface?

Here is a video of the coin gimmick:

I haven't had a chance to try this. But it is one of those things that keeps coming to mind.

Thinking about coin gimmicks just bought this to mind.

How about we secretly lower the gimmick on the 'Blue Crystal' box so it still looks solid at the top.

Then you take a cigarette thru quarter - and have the cigarette penetrate the coin (as well as the lid of the Blue Crystal) as you hold it just above the Blue Crystal prop?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ur_a5FTLQ38

I wonder if that odd visual will help boost both effects? Or perhaps it will just weaken both effects?

Would be interesting to find out.

Useful tip for the Flying Carpet by Lubor Fiedler. If you do the trick whilst wearing neon coloured socks - you can achieve the floating effect without the use of the brightly coloured carpet.

That tip is from Stereo's site. But is not in the new book - so thought I would mention it here.

How about you place some elastic thread across the top of the Blue Crystal prop?

You then place a playing card on top.

Now secretly lower the top of the prop - and push down on the card. Due to the buoyancy in the thread - it will seem to penetrate the lid of the crystal and also bounce back slightly. Hopefully - creating a sort of jelly type effect in the Blue Crystal.

Another idea I have yet to try!

All the best,

You need to use the Flying Carpet for Lubor's trick, otherwise there's no prop, and no story, and it makes no sense. You need to step onto something in order for it to look right.

As far as modifying the box in Crystal Cleaver, I did it by heating up an X-Acto knife so it would slice through the plastic, and then cutting off the extra bits. Extreme care is needed and I take no responsibility if you burn or cut yourself. But it only took me a few minutes to do. There is no certainty when taking these kinds of modifications--it's easy to destroy the prop by accident. I don't have a dremel tool, but I'm sure you could use that instead of the hot knife and it would likely be a lot safer.

Would heating up an X-Acto knife be sufficient for cutting the slot in the 'Blue Crystal' box for that new handling you gave in the Tenyo book?

That's how I did it.
