I only been doing card magic for about a month now and I was in a pub with my m8 last night having a few beer's mind my own when my m8 said go on show them guys over there some tricks.
I have only showed a few to my family and m8's. So here I was surrounded by 5-6 men asking too see me bust a few tricks. This was the first time that I done any tricks in public. Im glad my m8 pushed me into it because the tricks went down a storm and they was buying my drinks. What a great free night for me. Time to learn some more tricks now:)

I would recommend Jay Sankeys: Revolutionary Coin Magic. He has some excellent coins-across for the bar/pub situation. Aside from that, just adapt your standard 'tricks' for the bar situation, you don't wanna put cards in peoples hands before you say "We're gonna see how strong you are". Then make a snatching motion at their hand to really get them to hold onto it tightly in order to 'keep you away' from it.

Lived in a pub all my life. I'm 17 now. I feel that if I didn't live in a pub, I wouldn't be a magician now.
I learned you can adapt tricks to suit any occasion, and regardless of what people say, you can get away with ANYTHING when people are drunk. If you PM me I'll show you a few tricks with cocktail sticks, wine glasses, etc, etc. There are many books published, with chapters including 'bar magic'. If you're into the 'cheating' side of magic, have a look at "100 ways to in a tenner" by paul zenon, gives you some good magic/hoaxes to be used in the pubs. |

Personally I thought the term "to win a tenner" was a bit harsh...you'd have to be pretty gullible to a) bet against a magician and b) £10 is a bit steep for most of them scams!
but it makes good reading, and I think the little anecdotes are truly magic. (no pun) have fun reading. |

I just show the guys in the pub a few tricks which they love then I move on to a scam or bet.
I bet for a few pints not a tenner. And I think they don't mind buying me a pint or 2 cuz they loved the magic I just showed them. They happy with the tricks I showed them and I'm happy coz they thanking me for the tricks by buying me a few pints. If the boot was on the other foot I would be glad to buy someone a pint or 2 for a bit of fun and magic. that's my take on it really.

One thing to think about when performing in bars, it to "keep it simple" -things like alcohol, dimmed lighting and noise are disturbances, but they can work to your advantage.
Also, intoxicated people tend to forget in the speed of lightning, so they have a hard time following complex storyline routines. Still Barmagic is like all magic, Impact! Be sure to search for magic done with barobjects, I'm talking about: Napkins, beermaths, straws, Cig's, coins/bills etc. I can recommend DVD's like: Sankey's 45, Gregory Wilsons "On the spot", LeClair's "who's afraid..." Alot of great fast'n high impact routines that will get you started.. -e-
...As long as i`m not a world-champion at anything, the great reactions of doin` magic will do just fine.....

Burning ciggarette vanish is great in pubs....
the more drunk the spectator the better. Bitten and restored coin is good also, buy a drink, look at your change and say "hey, this coin is broke" they look at you as if you are mad, then just bite the coin, the restore it. a real jaw dropper.... |

I'm a large fan of doing coin magic (basic) with beer caps when I'm in a bar. Another thing, if you end up with a group watching you or you are the tender is doing a cups and balls routine with 2 or 3 tumblers/opaque glasses and some cocktail olives (or if you're going for tips, ask to borrow dollars and ball them up real tiny and use those!) And, as always, card to ceiling in a bar with make everyone freak out.
David Blaine is on TV. I'm here doing a trick for you. Now shut up and watch.

David Ben has an excellent cigerette through beer cap routine in his book "Tricks"
Makes some good sense and you don't have to buy the gimmick, (though you do have to make it at home, not hard at all though) and it seems very impromtu. |

I performed Lazy Man's Card trick at a brewpub here in Chicago for another couple. The spectator continued to cut, and as he cut, the neighboring table became interested. I took a sip of my ale and told him to cut more. It went on and on. The manager stopped in the aisle, and started watching. Finally, the spectator named the card and the revelation matched. The manager was so amazed that he bought my table a round of Christmas Ales and said he wanted interesting people like magicians in his restaurant. I highly recommend Lazy Man's Card trick with the patter from Lorayne's Close Up Card Magic book.
