They have already acknowledged that the concept has been around since the 30s and credit has been given. I am a full time working pro first and a creator second and it is irrelevant to me as a purchaser if an effect fools me in the demo. My concern always is: will it fool a lay audience? Will it leave a memorable inpact? I think real workers are more concerned with these things rather than if they are fooled themselves. I can see this being a great effect in the hands of a performer who has put the necessary work in their presentation skills to sell it.
Just the thrill and build up of smashing the napkin from the ends may not make magicians uncomfortable but if done well I can almost guarantee the non magician viewers will have anticipatory heebiejeebies. I don't know a soul at Sensor but I know good potential in an item when I see it and to me this has it. Congratulations guys.

I picked this up at Magi-Fest and love it. Don't sell this one short. They did a two phase routine for me and that's the way I do it. Snap is the first effect and it is fantastic. With nothing but a card and the pencil, you break the pencil in two. The "snap" sound is unbelievable. Sounds exactly like a pencil breaking. Exactly. You immediately restore and there is nothing to ditch. They went right into the vanishing pencil sequence with a napkin. When I showed the wife and kids, they were floored. I didn't even with the pencil at the beginning. Because of the sound and being able to feel the pencil, they never once questioned it, even at the end.
Some of the stuff taught on the dvd is a throw away. For example, when they showed the "rubber pencil" routine, I thought they were kidding. No way would anyone do it in the real world because it would be a dead giveaway. So you will probably ignore most of the "6" routines taught, but Snap is worth the price of admission bar none. |
