In a gesture of friendship, I ordered two old Santini manuscripts from the early 90's entitled, "Padlocks: Top Secret Opening Techniques For Escapists", and "Handcuffs: Top Secret Methods Of Escape" from Joe Tanner of Wheeler-Tanner Escapes, to send up to Steve Santini as a donation to his, soon to be open, escape museum, "The Escaporium", (Steve was unfortunately, unable to locate any of his own copies) I also posted Joe's information for anyone else wanting to obtain these extremely rare books. Well, to my dismay and disappointment, Steve informed me that the books arrived, but unfortuntely were not originals, but rather, poorly manufactured copies. I'm only glad that Steve is such a good friend and so understanding, otherwise the whole situation could have been totally embarassing. Unfortunately this is not the first story like this that I have heard regarding Mr.Tanner. In fact, there have been several, from several different sources. I'm just writing this, primarily to warn anyone out there contemplating purchasing these manuscripts, or anything else for that matter from Mr.Tanner, that he does indeed pass off copies as originals, and at $22.00 per manuscript, I am sadly disappointed with his business ethics.
In the future, I will be reserving all of my escape related purchases for Shawn and the Cannons. "CAVEAT EMPTOR!" Best regards, Tony Parisi |

I have been fairly lucky so far, except for one First day cover that was a fake. It not only had a fake postal cancelation stamp that was smaller and lighter than the postal service, but the picture itself as somewhat blurred. I gave $4 for it and have a duplicate origional so it is actualy worth quite a bit to me as an example of forgery. I don't have a stamp veiwer yet but the houdini stamp when veiwed through the USPS veiwer will show him in chains, as a means of authentication.
I never bought many books up until the last years or so. With books and manuscripts, now I always try to have the author sign them either to me, or just a signature. I also buy them signed to other folks as used copies. This started out for sentimental reasons. It won't help on the old ones, but it looks like any new ones should be signed as a means of protecting the buyer as well as the author. Sorry you got burned Tony. Maybe its not intentional and a supplier credibility problem with them. Have you given them a chance to make good? I guess you know you hit the Bigtime when you find knockoff copies of your own work. Sad world we live in.

Hi all,
I am afraid this was not, as has been suggested, "unintentional". I have heard of Mr. Tanner doing this, (making photocopies of manuscripts and books to avoid having to buy authentic copies from the proper sources), for some time. I know for a fact he has done this with some of the writtings of Norm Bigelow and now I have proof he has done it with my work. As an author, I can tell you this really tees me off. Firstly, there are so few people actually writting on escapes and sharing methods and techniques and secondly one does not go and do it with the hopes of getting rich because this is just not that kind of authorship market. So, to have a guy like Joe Tanner come along and do this to Tony, (and myself because I do not see a dime from gosh knows how many pirated copies of my work he has already sold), is steaming to say the least. Obviously it is time to speak with my U.S. attorney. I would strongly warn people out there to give serious thought before having any business dealings with Joe Tanner. As I write this I am looking at a cashed bank cheque for $1060.00 Canadian I sent Joe Tanner on May 2nd, 2002 for some handcuffs I never got. After 2 years of e mails asking for my money back I have yet to see that too. The books I put out that Tony tried to buy for us and instead recieved bootleg copies of look like this in thier ORIGINAL form as issued by me: - They have a yellow cover - They have 3 staples securing the covers to the inside pages and, - They have two words rubber stamped on the front cover in a colour of ink different than the print ink colour. If you happen to have these books and they do not look like what I have just described, then you too have been ripped off. I would appreciate hearing from any of you with bootleg copies and I would suggest you contacting Joe Tanner and demanding a refund. In the very near future I will re release this information in new manuscripts and will inform all here of the appearance of same. Very best and thank you for any information on this serious matter, Steve Santini |

Hi, I agree with all the comments regarding this topic and my I add the following.
What some people don't realise or care to take into consideration is, apart from the illegal action of breaking copyright laws, is that although the face value of the printed work appears more expensive than the paper it is written on, the purchaser should be aware of the hours and hours that it takes to write, edit and draw pictures to make up any given work. As the escape community is small and that not everyone will ever purchase a copy of all books by all authors, it is highly unlikely that the author will ever get a complete return financially on the time taken to impart the knowledge in their books. If many escape artists wish to continue to be able to read and share in the information provided by others, I would ask that you always purchase and original publication ( and if in doubt, contact the author of the book you have , where possible) Thank you Ian McColl

Its very disturbing!!These are the secrets of people's entire lifes work they are sharing! Its like stealing a part OF THEIR VERY SOUL!!! This blows chunks!!!
Shame be upon those involved until reparations are made. In the future please do not be offended if I request a signed copy of any materials I may purchase.

Hi,
I do not at all consider an imposition to provide signed copies of anything I produce. In fact, I consider it very humbling that anyone would even ask. I have just ordered a custom paper stamp. In the future, (after the Indy convention), all of my written works will bear not only my signature but also this impressed seal,(something no mere photocopy machine can reproduce). As for the items of mine Shawn will have for sale at Indy, all of them bear my signature. Regards, Steve Santini |

Very good idea Steve. Too bad it came to that. I would recommend the same to anyone that is currently marketing or plans to market their valuable intellectual property.
If everyone pulls together and signs, the odds of any one getting away with knockoffs in the future will go way down.

Just one Question here. does Joe Tanner still Stamp all of His Books with The Wheeler-Tanner rubber stamp. I also tryed buying something from Joe sent him a E-mail and Never Heard from him I guess he is Making to Much Money. that he don't care about the Customers. I wonder what Prynce Wheeler would think of the Business now. Don,
I tryed Contacting the Author/Person of a Book who put it out I Basically got my Head Bit off and was told why didn't I try such and such meaning the person who was selling them the person that was selling them no longer listed them and I mainly wanted to find out if the book was still available. Don, |

I had similar epxeriences with Joe Tanner with 2 Norm Bigelow manuscripts. When I sent them back demanding my money back, I received no reply. That was probably 8 years ago and I have never bought a thing from him since--I always support voting with your wallet.

Considering how many bridges this guy has burned, it's a wonder why he is even still in business. This puts into stark contrast the many people out there willing to buy illegal products without a care as to whether the author sees a dime from it. If it weren't for the demand, Tanner would have no reason to supply. So he is not the only guilty party in this.
And his "business practice" of simply ignoring complaints is probably the saddest thing of all. |

On the topic of Bigelow manuscripts there are MANY, MANY sellers who have/do carry his manuscripts and Bigelow has NEVER seen a dime, escape sellers, magic sellers etc.
Norm was telling me about this recently that magic store/ business' either photocopy his work and sell it OR actually get a supply from him and never pay him for it. The EARL not only sells official Bigelow manuscripts but we also pay him in a timely fashion. Some may note that their cover colors vary from person to person (Cord 1 - Blue covers and Yellow for example) this is done by Norm and has nothing to do with us. Norm has had such a great experience with selling through the EARL that he is going to start writting manuscripts again (first time since the earily 90's), the first new one will be available by Indy. No Norm's prices are extremely reasonable, I'm sure some people look at someones misplaced trust (and kindness) as a way to rip the person off and make a few more bucks.

I would like to thank all of you for this information.
I am new to the world of escape magic (although I have been a practicing locksmith for eight years) and was considering puchasing products from Mr. Tanner but would not wish to suport such business practices. I believe in giving credit where credit is due and would not want the author of such works to go unrewarded. However I would also like to point out that the reason such bogus business practices work is because there are a large number of people who only dabble in magic and do not realise that the products they are buying are not genuine......these people are also being ripped off. |

I hear the guy from the hanabarbara company signed all of his art with a dna encoded ink pen. Zoinks!
Anyways pricing is not a factor. When knowledge is this good and a part of a mans originality it should be priced high. Theres a reason why the elite are just that elite. The knowledge should be guarded and if you can afford it, is it ok to go buy a bootlegged manuscript? Hell no! Mr. Santini is a very talented originator of original escape ideas, the malicious stealing and ripping off of his ideas disgusts me. In other words, by EARL! |

Hello All.
Yes I would have to agree whole heartedly with what my fellow Performers & Escape enthuasist have had to say, There are many more reputable dealers out there Cannons , Earl, & McColl among others, Then to allow someone as unethicle as JT to get you bent out of shape. Tanner is NOT one of them!! This is a simple fact!! Some times it comes down to cases ,Instesd of "Wacking them in the head" as So many have wanted to do at one time or another ( Ha, Ha) I think that a much more effective plan of attack is to Wack them where it hurts...the wallet!! Many months back besides Myself The talented Michael Griffin, was also "Burned "by Tanner. as was posted in a back issue of Handcuffs. org. Personally I feel that a line has to be drawn in the sand & this person should experience what is known as being "Blacklisted"!! This must not and can not be allowed to continue! Cheers Michael Lee |

I think most folks have printers and copiers, or access to them.
Demand your money back if you have been sold fake books or other items. Print 50 or a 100 copies of your letter and get a box of envelopes and stamps and start mailing one every day or every other day until you are refunded. Make it clear that they will have to live with the ripoff daily until they make good. The only good thing about snail mail is it can't be blocked like e-mail. What can they do? take you to court, for requesting your money back after they sold you stolen material? You folks that are getting burned need to get tough on this stuff if you want it to stop. Selling counterfeit merchandise through the mail, is mail fraud. Speak with a postal inspector near you.

Hi,
In Tanner's case, even such aggresive tactics will probably fall short. He ripped me off for $1200.00 Canadian dollars over 2 years ago and I have yet to see either handcuffs or money despite repeatedly e mailing and phoning him, and also by my spreading the word via others. I guess that only an honest person will behave in honest ways to correct a bad situation. This is probably why Joe Tanner has done nothing. Regards, Steve Santini |
