Force of Will – Dave Hooper
$14.95 http://www.murphysmagic.com/product.aspx?id=55583 There are a thousand ways to get a spectator to choose a certain card. Even today, new methods are being brought to light, even as you read this. Yet, one thing has remained constant throughout the years, the pursuit of the perfect force. Dave Hooper has refined his take on the classic force for more years than many of us have even considered taking our card magic seriously... And the result is a thing of pure beauty. Over the years I have seen a number of videos on the classic force, some good some bad. This is one of the good ones. Dave Hooper has been doing his version for around 35 years and has been fooling many magicians familiar with the classic force. His improvement makes the force look and feel differently from what people are used to. The sheer casualness of the move will fool most anyone. For the money, you get a dvd that is a little less than 13 minutes long. Dave does a good job of teaching the move in a very short time. He also offers some valuable practice advice. The only downside to this is that you are paying for a single move and no trick. The move is excellent and if you have been wanting to learn or need a new force, this is money well spent. Positives: Excellent move, well taught. A lot of info in a short time. Negatives: The only thing you get is one move. Might have been better grouped with other things for a longer dvd. Conclusions: I don't currently do the classic force but this has whetted my appetite to give it a try. |

Thanks for the review.
Could you comment on the following: Difficulty level? Practice required to get it down? Reliability? Does he cover effective outs? |

I'm sorry but I must say that.. I found nothing new here. What move ? What subtelty ? There was nothing new for me here.
Yes, it is a 13 minutes DL, but the video ends after 7min, the rest is afterthoughts. Worst buy of this year for me |

If you are a beginner, it's a nice tutorial on how David does his force. If you like how he does it in the trailer, you get taught everything you need to master that just like him. David has the same number of fingers and thumbs as you (I hope). The only difference between him and a 'you' is the number of times he has performed the move with care. There is no reason that anyone can't perform this like David does in the trailer. They will need to put in the same level of practice to get the same results. That's really pretty fair... As Karl says, it's a short tutorial. Just what you need, some tips and some outs so you can practice without fear of being caught out. Difficulty: the technique is very simple. The effort will be in practicing it EVERY time you have a card selected. Most magicians forget, or fear being caught, so they never work on the move long term. Reliability: It's a great technique. You will miss at first but he covers effective outs. This is not a self working gimmick sort of thing... There are a few DVDs on the market teaching the classic force. Whichever you choose, the core aspects of the force is pretty much the same. It's probably more important that you commit long term to practice. This one is cheap, available as a download, not packed with fillers, and David's teaching is clear, fast and delivers. Hope this helps Dominic

Reactions to Dave Hooper's video have been mixed, and that doesn't surprise me. Some were disappointed with the brevity of the video (it's only 12 minutes long), and found that they didn't learn much more than what they already knew about the Classic Force, this being a variation of it. On the other hand Dave Hooper has received a lot of applause for his amazing ability to do the classic force consistently, and some of the nuances that he teaches can be helpful.
This video will especially be helpful for beginners new to the classic force, and can also prove useful for people struggling with the classic force and looking to refine their technique, or see it performed by a expert like Dave Hooper. I wish it had been priced at a lower price point than $15, but some people will get good value out of it - just come in with right expectations. I think it's inaccurate to call it "his version". It's not really different than any other "version". I thought the video provided some very helpful tips that many people can benefit from, but it's not a new method or anything. Dave's just really good at the classic force
