I just learned of a fantastic marked deck called the daredevil deck. Of course one could do the routine I am about to describe with any marked deck, I suppose. But daredevil is awesome!
Present the deck, say to spec. "God knows what we are going to pray before we pray it (Matthew 6:8). To demonstrate this, I will know your card before you do". Hand spec the deck, he can shuffle, do what ever. Ask spec to select a card without looking at it, and place face down on table. Immediately, you know what it is. Say "You do not know what that card is. Just as you do not know what your next prayer is. But I know that you just selected the king of hearts (or what ever card it is). In this same manner, God KNOWS what your next prayer is and He is already at work on it, even though you have not prayed it yet!" |

I'm not a seasoned performer. I'm actually just a newbie, so please, take what I have to say with a grain of salt. If you (or whoever reads this) disagree with me I'll be happy to listen to your opinion. Anyway, I think that your patter could be
improved. I don't like the idea that you're demonstrating the power of God, and I believe some more conservative christians might have an issue with it. Instead, I think this would be better: Before you even start I suggest you give the deck away to be shuffled by multiple people. Don't worry about they noticing the secret: they won't find it unless they look for it, so just don't give them any reason to do that beforehand and you're fine. You're also covered by a really good missdirection while pattering. For the patter, start your presentation explaining that God knows us really well, and that he already did even before we were born (Jeremiah 1:5). Talk about how God cares about us, and explain that he knows us so well that he knows what we're going to pray for even before we do(Matthew 6:8). At this point, ask whoever got the deck to pick any card from the middle and put it face down on the table, without looking at it or letting anyone look (Don't look at it, but be sure to call attention to it and having it somewhere visible! This gets people curious about what you're doing.). Explain that we, as humans, can't fully understand this, but that we can think about the stuff we know well. An artist know his paint, a mechanic know his tools, a teacher know his books, a potter know his clay (and the Bible compare God to a potter in Isaiah 64:8) and you, as a magician, know your cards. Tell them that you know your cards so well that you can tell the card in the tale is a king of hearts. Then go ahead and explain that if humans can know their stuff so well then God know us infinitely times better. He knows what we need, he knows what we want, he knows more about us than ourselves. And follow from here onward. The effect here is only a complimentary aspect of the message. Actually, the cards are only used to illustrate a point. I'm not sure we could even call it an effect after all. Also, this is a rather obvious use of the method you're using. Sorry for the lenghty text (I actually tried to cut on the details). |

Vannma and Magiconcio: It seems to me that your spectators will come away from both of your presentation simply saying, "The cards are marked." I'm not convinced that this idea accomplishes much. It is my opinion that it is much better to use a marked deck for a less direct effect (a reveal or whatever that is a few steps removed). Especially if you are going to pay the kind of money that is being asked for the Daredevil Deck.

Excellent idea Magiconcio above- that train of thought for a routine can be used pretty much for any prediction type trick out there (and there are obviously tons of them).

On the other side of this coin, I think that something like this may work greatly for an Invisible deck, but instead of reading cards, you read people. You're onto something here. |

I agree it's a very obvious application of the marked deck principle, but I was most focused on the patter. By the way, I like MagicBus idea of using a prediction effect. Think about it like that: after revealing the card people will be like "Well, of course the deck is marked". Then you patter about how God knows our prayers even before we actually pray and proceed to reveal that you predicted the card from the beginning.

One way to do this would be to involve a third person who actually sees the card. just that simple distraction from the method sells it much more strongly. KJ |
