If you want to go old school, take a look at The Magic of Matt Schulien. He owned a bar/restaurant and a lot of his magic was geared to the conditions you are dealing with. His signed card under the the tablecloth is classic.

To be fair Matt didn't have the card signed. Also that is FAR beyond intermediate skill level.

I was going to recommend Extreme Burn, a fairly simple trick to perform.
You mentioned that you get together with your friends often. If that's the case, you shouldn't repeat the same tricks. That means you need to be prepared to do many different tricks. I would concentrate on simple tricks that don't take months to master. There are many of them. There were some good resources suggested above.

If you can find video or reference for Jay Marshall doing "Table Crap" it will be well worth the trouble.

Well if someone is kind enough to do the work and provide a link it REALLY is worth it!

I just picked up "Magic with Everyday Objects: Over 150 Tricks Anyone Can Do at the Dinner Table" by George Schindler. Some of them seem a bit silly, but a lot of them are usable, and sometimes even the silly trivial ones can have a good effect when used in the right context, e.g., in response to some topic of conversation that makes them really apropos.
