clopper posted a question about another effect called the web. I have J. Pace's version where the spider ends up on the back of their hand. My question is When do you do the Web?? I don't dare to do it to anyone, other than family, becuse their heart might be week or they might cry or become violent etc.... You may be thinking "What a wimp!" Your right.
Most magically yours, WR

WR--I am in absolute agreement with your thinking on this one. I choose my participants very carefully. One of the women I work with is a bug lover. Always catching and releasing spiders, caterpillars, etc. She loved the trick. I tend to do it around Halloween. I was just thinking, maybe using blank face cards, some stickers, and a different lightweight 'load' we could do a completely different effect, less scary, or a comedy bit. Jim Pace and others who know about this type of thing: Is this a copyright violation or are we within our rights to modify the effect as we see fit, once we have bought it fair and square? Thanks for the chance to bring this topic up.

The web is probably the only only Jim Pace effect that I own, but dont ever use.
I bought it and thought I would love using it, but I cant bring myself to spring it on anyone. Wimp? My guess is that there are a more than a few of us. Actually I did use the spider that came with it, in the ofice around halloween, I hooked up the spider with some IT and had him dancing on my hand etc. And that freaked out so many people that I never got the nerve to do the web. I love using this trick, since I work at a magic shop I always have people say, "Show me a trick." Why not scare the wits out of them. I've seen grown men almost cry from this trick.

I've done it several times and got great reactions. But I can see where you have to be careful. Don't do it to someone on oxygen or very old. It works with the right individuals.

Regarding Jim Pace's "The Web":
I feel it is one of the BEST tricks in the world. I also feel it is one of the WORST tricks in the world. With such possible exceptions as amusement park rides and horror movies, fear should not be used as entertainment. I modified The Web so that it can be done in a restaurant setting (obviously, NOT with the spider prop) and the person helping (usually a child, but not always) gets a free souvenir (unlike The Web's variant "Caterpillar Love).

That is great thinking Geoff!
I liked the concept, but not the ultimate effect since most of the time, I am trying to meet people, and not to scare them away. But obviously, using something amusing would be the solution. Thanks a lot! BroDavid

I perform this trick regulary and I always find if I laugh after the initial shock they seem to laugh aswell. I have never had someone become violent.

If you look back a little, there is a whole thread on this effect, plus a horror story.
