For those of you who use comic misdirection...I've been wondering about the following:
Suppose you want to make an unseen move (let's say for the sake of an example, a pass). You tell a joke. When do you think it is best for you to make your move? a) As you tell the joke b) As they start to laugh c) After they stop laughing d) Some other time

Look at their eyes. When they look at your eyes do the move.

When you realize you have them engaged with the joke. They can't focus on two things at once.

As the good Father indicated, it depends on the story/joke & the audience.
It also depends on the prop, move and the magician. Did you catch the sleight?

First it must be a good joke.
Engage them and at the point of the release of the most tension do the move. Generally that is on the laugh. But some jokes have such a big release you might wait until they are almost done laughing to get the most cover. If you are working for more than 8 people getting all the eyes is tough. The reason it works is that they are following you. Something unexpected happens. Now they are shocked and trying to regain the footing to pay attention again. It is a blind spot as they gather up and come back down the right road. The key is engaging them as was said earlier.
