Hi all... I've been involved in the magic community for upwards of 40 years, but never quite got around to joining IBM or SAM... until now.
I recently joined (and was accepted into) SAM with local chapter #255 (Metro Detroit) as my local assembly. The acceptance letter I received from National SAM said that since I "affiliated" with a local chapter, my welcome packet and pin was forwarded to the local chapter to be given to me at an Assembly meeting. So, I checked on the SAM website to see when the next local meeting was, and found next to nothing! For starters, there's nothing about local meetings, activities, presence, anything! Additionally, when I search for Local Assembly 255, only five names come up... one of which is mine! Do local chapters exist? If so, is there another method of engaging with them other than the national website? Thanks!
Tada!...

Dapperdan,
First and foremost, congrats on becoming a National member of the S.A.M. From my experience, the national website will only show members who are registered with national...if that makes sense. Your local assembly may have several members who may not be national members. From my understanding...you "should" become a national member in order to join a local assembly in your area. Although, each assembly is different and follow different guidelines. The national website usually doesn't give specific details on assembly meetings and such. This is up to whoever is providing information from your local assembly...usually the secretary or someone appointed to such a task. Someone has to actual create and update a "page" for your assembly with information regarding meetings and photos etc. Currently, my assembly is trying to figure out that process to no avail...hopefully, we'll get some guidance from national. Otherwise, I suggest having someone from your assembly put out a monthly newsletter that gets emailed to all active members each month? That way, everyone can keep up to date with upcoming meetings etc. Also create a FaceBook page for your club if it doesn't already have one? Check out our page on FaceBook (you should be logged into Facebook in order to view the page): www.facebook.com/hawaiimagicclub I hope something I've said helps...good luck with your assembly and aloha! -Kekoa |

I found this link for Assembly 255 but it looks like they haven't done anything on their webpage since 2001. http://www.angelfire.com/wi/SamMagicClub/copy_of_index.html Many of the members in my local assembly belong to multiple local assemblies. We have 4 Sam assemblies and quite a few IBM rings in my area. (Northern NJ) As far as I know you can belong to more than one and also to IBM. If you find the right group of people, you only need one. I got lucky and got into an assembly with nice hospitable people and they have an active agenda. They have lectures every month with big names like Rocco, Gregory Wilson, Kranzo, etc. You can go to different meetings as a guest and then join when you find the one you like. Good luck, Stan

Hello and Good Day!
My name is Tommy Collins. I've always been a huge fan and admirer of Magic. Close-up, card, coin, stage... It doesn't matter to me, I enjoy it all! My interest in Magic started at age 11 with the Mattel Show-Stoppers Magic Kit. I loved the mystery and fun of the performance. I stopped however, a couple of years into the interest. The great news is, I now have a 12 year-old son, who has been watching magic performances on YouTube, and approached me a few months ago with his interest in Magic!! I was thrilled and it immediately rekindled my flame for doing Magic once again. Since the Fall of 2015, I've shared much Magic with my son and have done my best to teach and expose him to what Magic is all about in addition to being a performer. He is slowly learning and that's ok! I'm learning as well and discovering all sorts of new wonderful Magic. I'm a member of the I.B.M. & S.A.M organizations. I also collect beautiful artful decks of playing cards. I've grown my new found collection to over 140 decks since October of 2015 and look forward to creating an appropriate display soon. Thank you for visiting and reading my bio. Tommy |
