To be successful in any field you need to practise, practise, practise, but how do you do it, how did you do it when you were first starting out. Stand in front of a mirror and talk away to yourself, use a recorder, film yourself? When you were starting out how did you practise your tricks. You can only ask your relatives and friends to stand still while you are reading their mind - especially if it's the fourth or fifth time you've 'read' their mind .
So how did you practise when, like myself, you were just starting off? How did you develop your patter? Or, as I expect, was it just getting up on you hind legs and going for it |

Welcome kah22,
I started with Cards, so practice for skill is easy enough. Practice for performing was first for my Mentor and partner Tom, who would give me a critique. Then practice imagining an audience and incorporating Tom's advice. Then for other Magician friends and family. Magic Clubs can be a friendly (but over kind) audience but it can get you out there. Finding a small group of Magicians, committed to honest but kindly worded feedback is a good idea. Lay Friends and co-workers are the last step before the public. Mentalists may give better advice for you. Try asking in the "Penny for your Thoughts" forum. Check the search or scan the list of threads to see if others have asked this before. Good Luck! -Mary Mowder |

I used to drive my mother crazy springing cards from hand to hand while she was watching her programs. But, it worked! When I needed to check angles to make sure I wasn't telling anything, I used a mirror. Hours and hours of practice in front of a mirror I used to prop up against the wall on my bed, to make sure all the angles were known and covered. For patter, you just play-act that you have an audience, and try and make-believe to the best of your ability - even the "ad-libs" were practiced this way. I used to pretend someone made a comment, and I would come back with an ad-lib. |

I practice the verbal portion of my routines mostly while I am driving. Just speaking through the lines while at the same time imagining what move or gesture may go with it.
Practice just your introduction. How does it all start. I always start with a thought.... like "My grandfather used to tell me, Life is like a deck of Cards. You never know what it will deal you." You will be surprised at how well this type of practice works. |
