Hi everyone, thanks for taking the time to read. Been a hobby magician for some time but recently people have been asking me to do weddings and functions and offering to pay me- quite a compliment- I do a mixture of close up and mentalism but am looking for advice on dvds or books that will help me put together a routine for walk about/table hopping etc - any help or direction would be greatly appreciated from this novice and nervous budding magician. Thanks all.

Welcome johnmc,
Strolling Magic is a nice way to start because you don't really need a routine of several tricks. You can introduce yourself and do one bit, thank them and move on. I like a fairly clear explanation/intro for beginners like: "Hi I'm John, Bob and Marie have asked me to perform some Close-Up Magic to help celebrate their Wedding. Would you like to see some Magic up close?" I know it is a mouthful but it is clear and will help you feel justified as a new-by and you will get more yeses than if you are nervous as a beginner. You can do one and move on or if they are enjoying it do another. Connecting with them is your goal, beginners often just want to do their trick and go. You will feel more comfortable with experience. Natural routines will come into being, either bits that flow well from one to another or the conversation may naturally lead to doing one bit instead of another. If you breathe, smile, make eye contact and care about them and their experience, you will get better over time. Almost no-one has a perfect first few experiences (I certainly did not). Those who asses how they could have done better after each event and try again have a better chance of going on in Magic. Of corse practicing at home till you are completely familiar with the tricks and the purported explanation for the ability to do it are very important (like are you a mind reader or can you see the future or....?) Practice giving the spectator simple, clear (and friendly) explanations of what you want from them. I see more Magicians blow that part than any other. You can make a start with as little as three tricks but six will make you more confident. Don't go for the complicated tricks. simple clear effects than can be easily described are your best choices.Things that don't require a table and are not angle sensitive are more useful over time. Best of luck and have fun. -Mary Mowder |

Thanks Mary for taking time out to reply, most considerate- think I over kill it at times- did a kids show at the weekend and ended up doing over 50 different tricks- took 2 days to recover some of the little "treasures" were googling how to do it as I performed!! Adults are much easier and more fun. Think I need to narrow it down a little- thanks again

50 tricks is a large repertoire to wrap your head around and to carry.
Do you mean 50 different tricks or 50 including repeats. Was this a Stand-up performance or strolling Close-Up? I really burned through the material as a beginner (and still do more than most in a 30 Stand-Up). -Mary Mowder |

Egad! Mary will tell you that I do abouta dozen routines in my 45 minute school assembly program. The "little angels" are busy laughing, so they don't have time to google!
Anyway, it' all Generic props, except the egg bag, rings, and the mutilated parasol. The props weigh about 23 lbs, and, the show sets up in about 4 minutes 2 of those minutes before I leave home, and 2 when I arrive. (What you carry in your head, is much lighter than what you carry in your hands).

So true! I'm working on two of Dick's routines just this afternoon. (Miser's Dream and multiplying rubber balls)
