Am I crazy or have I seen a version of the Guillotine Illusion that is situated on a bench so that you can "cut a volunteer in half" with it? That is, the stock goes around the waist instead of the neck. Has anyone else seen this, know what it is called, and/or who makes it??? Thanks!

Wellington makes one that works like butter... Smooth and flawless every time. I used one for about 100 shows then sold it when I changed material so I can highly recommend it.

IMHO - The best version is the HEAD ZOPPER. Uses an electric Sabre SAW, I used one, sold it when I decided on act that all fit in one bag.

Pete, I guess we disagree on this..... I've always thought that the Head Zopper had one screamingly obvious solution to the mystery of the illusion it's (purportedly) presenting.... And the fact this is the actual solution to the mystery is, in my opinion, the antithesis of what makes a good illusion.

I have to agree with Sealegs, now I also would say I think there are others that make a greater impression and are far less obvious, for example I believe this one was on a non-competition segment of Wizard Wars but unfortunately I can't find a video of a performance to link because you have to see it in operation to fully appreciate it, of course you have to have copious amounts of both space and resources, but I'm including it because I don't think it's nearly as well known...

Jeffl, The version you linked to has elements that the Head Zopper doesn't. Most importantly part of the blade can be see during the cutting. This is also true for the Harbin Sawing too. The illusion both create is much more complete because of this.
While the method/ mystery remains intact with these versions I'm not convinced that any of these sorts of illusions actually creates a true suspension of disbelief in the audiences' mind... that strange quantum like state where something is both believed as being exactly what it purports to be, while simultaneously accepting that the scenario or situation is impossible. That's not to say they can't be made into interesting and entertaining bits of theatre. I just think that acknowledging the limitations of these illusions can make for a better and more appropriate presentation of them.

Harbin also made something called the Blades of Olprah (sp). It was a waist type guillotine. He was given to the late Alan Shaxon.

Richard did Mr. Harbin make any plans available for this, or did he just build the one unit?

It's the Blades of OPAH and the issue of plans, builders and rights was covered elsewhere on the Café:

I just found this, and have never seen it before, but this is more along the lines of what I was thinking when I started this thread. This model appears to be from Japan and the video was posted 6 years ago. Does anyone know anything similar to this being manufactured and sold in the U.S.?

The one in this video is basically a Lester Lake Chopper. You can find this at http://www.illusionartsmagic.com/details.php?pid=9&cid=1
They make a couple of themed models.
