Kind of strange to see Deep Purple being honored with barely a mention of lead guitarist Ritchie Blackmore. I heard the 3 original members refused to play with him and Blackmore said he hasn't played a Deep Purple song since he left the band in 1993 and he couldn't care less about the R&R Hall of Fame.

I'm good friends with Joe Lynn Turner, who was the original singer for Ritchie Blackmore's post-Deep Purple band Rainbow. (Ironically, Joe Lynn later also had a short spell as lead singer with Deep Purple).
Every time Joe Lynn and I hung out and had a few too many drinks, he would invariably start recounting disturbing tales about Blackmore's involvement in black magic, and how it affected and scared him and other band members. But regarding Deep Purple's induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame: It's about time! As a teenage musician in 1970, when I first heard the album Deep Purple In Rock, I thought I might as well give up trying, because their music and hard rock sound epitomized everything I had been striving to achieve. |

Wow.
My Woman From Tokyo is a killer tune from Deep Purple.

He had no interest in attending, but on the other hand he's launching a brief tour of his own this summer to revisit and play some of his classic Purple as well as Rainbow songs (taking a break from the Renaissance rock he's been playing for the last couple of decades or so in Blackmore's Night). I'm a colossaf fan. (For instance, I spent three years playing guitar in a Rainbow tribute band, and even scalloped my own Stratocaster's fingerboard....)

Did you ever play the guitar solo from Child in Time? Probably one of my all-time favorites. When it comes to playing solos, I emulate Blackmore -- if only insofar as I never play the same solo the same way twice (neither does he). It's always improvised (with the rare exception of certain signature licks or brief passages within a very few particularly well-known solos, such as key parts of the one in Highway Star).
