Has anyone ever been caught or called-out on using a m*r*ed deck?
I haven't, but I don't do anywhere near as much magic as most here. |

Aside from the spectators who assume every effect is done using marked cards, I would venture to say that being legitimately busted using a marked deck is due to the magician not mastering the use of employing said deck. i.e. Constantly looking at the backs of the cards for too long, spreading the cards when doing so wouldn't make sense, doing an effect where marked cards would be the only conceivable explanation for how it was done (too-perfect theory), etc. I do not use marked decks, but just a thought.

Sure, I'd generally expect so too
But I want to hear what people's real experiences are as theory doesn't always match reality, lol |

I don't use an MD but I know a man who does his name is Boris Wild, I see him lecture in London and he fried everyone.
You can get his own custom cards and lecture notes here. http://www.boriswild.com/magicshop/Boris......hop.html Jason.
Magic or just an illusion? it's a free choice .... isn't it?

ThomasJ makes a good point. No matter how hard we attempt to keep audiences from using "trick decks" (this BS of using a Bicycle brand deck because everyone is familiar with them is pure RUBBISH by the way),it will always be the easy out for a spectator when trying to figure out how a card trick is done by claiming the deck is rigged in some fashion.. I even had a spectator look over the back design of a deck (unmarked) I was performing with once. He finished examining them and a devilish grin crossed his face as he proclaimed to his mates, "Just as I expected....a marked deck!".

It's happened once to me, but I think the guy who said something was a magician. He claimed he wasn't when we talked after but I wasn't sure if he was messing with me or not.

So long as he didn't bust you in front of others. Shouldn't a magi know better than to make such a comment, though?
Has anyone kept away from MDs because of the perceived risk? |

Notthatlarsen and Terrible Wizard,
It depends on what you mean by a magician. Does going to a magic shop and buying a marked deck make you a magician? If so there is no reason to expect that a "magician" would know or care about exposure. |

I got caught using a Ted Lesley pack by a nine year old girl. She was not distracted by the back design, but spotted the marks instantly. Just goes to show you!

I've done a few effects with an MD and I simply didn't feel comfortable with it. I felt like if any spectator wanted to look at the deck they'd spot the marks immediately. Classic problem really, thinking everybody is seeing something because I know where I'd be looking if I were them. Nobody looks at my hand when I drop the hand holding a palmed card to my side and start talking and gesturing with the other hand, but I worry that half of them are going to go "palmed card, tired of this." and walk away. I think that's the kind of thing experienced magicians are talking about when they say "Don't run if you're not being chased." but it's a hard thing to overcome.
If you can get comfortable using the marked deck I have a few ideas if someone accuses you of marking the deck. When marking, pick any four matching spot cards in the deck like the 5's and don't mark them at all. You'll have 4 cards in 52 that are unmarked but you know they're 5's. Force any one of those unmarked 5's on the accusing spectator. Then do the "I want you to call out each suit in turn, Clubs, Spades, Hearts, Diamonds" and watch for cues like blinking when the they say each one. When they've got the card in hand and you've identified it, tell them that since the card is in their hands and they suspect a marked deck, you couldn't stop them from inspecting the card thoroughly before they handed it back and personally encouraged the audience to applaud. The reason I still fear a marked deck is simple: I am the worst at card forcing you've ever seen. If I'm holding one card in my hands I'm not sure I could make a spectator pick the correct one. I have one force that works but it looks horrible. If you've got a good force and the confidence to pull it off, it might give you an easy out when people want to question your methods. |

I use a marked deck all the time, even when I don't need it. Never been caught or questioned.

Charlie Miller had a great out. He always traveled with two large guys, one Black one White. Their only purpose was to get him out if anyone suspected something.
One of the last living 10-in-one performers. I wanted to be in show business the worst way, and that was it.
