It happened several times this evening at my Monday eve. gig
I have a spectator place their selected card under their cell phone for safe keeping. I then have them sign the card and then back under the cell phone. Finally they place the card back in the deck I'm holding. It is revealed in my wallet.(no big deal, we all do it) BUT... When I show the card in my wallet, they pick up their cell phone and notice the card is gone. They don't remember putting the card back in the deck. The reactions were priceless. When it happened the first few times I thought it was the particular spectator but it happened to a majority of the people I did the routine for. Nice psychological discovery for me anyway. Maybe it's been done before but I always try new twists and turns on the effects I perform so this was extremely fun and surprising for me. Just an FYI

This reminds me of a performance of mine, where one spectator had to cut a small packet of cards, count them while I turned my back, and put them into his shirt pocket for the time being. I went on with the trick (I don't even remember which trick, it was many years ago). After the climax I asked for the cards, which were still sitting in his shirt pocket. The guy looked at me as if I had said something very strange, pulled out the cards and stared at me in disbelief. Since I wasn't prepared for that, I probably looked like a stunned mullet myself, because of his reaction. For him, that non-event was the best trick of the evening - a trick he did all by himself.

I wonder if the presence of the phone in causing so many associations for some that they are not fully engaged with their surroundings for a bit. (Just be glad they are not driving LOL.)
So they are relying on a half memory of signing the card and placing it under the phone. Good find. Let us know of any refinements that work out of if you get a better idea of what is going on.. -Mary |

Good thinking, Mary. It is possible that each time their attention is drawn to their phone, they drift into a sort of addiction-driven lull. Maybe makes for an interesting end result, but maybe by sacrificing focus. Worth thinking about...

It would be interesting to learn is this "repeat ploy" works only with a phone because of addiction, any personal object, or any random object.
I have long witnessed how the mind vanishes when a cellphone rings ...

Almost every table I perform for the patrons have their devices on the table. I started to have the spectators place cards under them just to use someting that was personal. I used to ask them to just place the card face down on the table, hopefully on a dry spot. By having them place the card ,unsigned, under the iPhone initially then asking them to sign it while my head is turned they place it back under the device. I then turn around and riffle down the edge of the deck asking the spectator to say stop. When they do I ask them to place the card right where they said stop. I then continue on with my routine with the astonished result.
I may try it using a napkin on the table or a placemat that completely covers the card. I think that is the key. Not under a salt shaker for example. I'll experiment this week with my other gigs. Maybe the device has a distracting affinity in some way as was mentioned above. Thanks for the responses.
