Hello everyone. I've been learning everything I can on busking lately and it's left me with an interesting question. When you perform do you use a pouch, table sevant, modified clothes like Cellini, go comando, or something entirely different. I'm just interested in know people's preferences and why.

You use what you want to use. Go out and busk, then decide what works for you. Reading and watching videos is not learning about busking. Hitting the streets is how you learn.

Of course, and I don't mean to seem demeaning, but that is a very tired saying. You learn from others experiences. All of human knowledge is built from our ancestors experiences. Therefore it makes sense to ask what others do, weigh what they say and then make your own judgement and put it into action. This can save valuable time and momey. Reading and watching videos is learning about busking. So is getting out there and performing. Both have their place. Did Cellini not first learn from Slydini before becoming great. I want to hear from others even just for knowledge sake.

I understand your point. I used to use a table as well as a rope to create my stage. I also used a pouch I got from Frank at theambitiouscard. The rope and table gave me a lot of security as to my stage and let people know what I was doing.
Over time, I got sick of lugging a table around and changed my closer, so I didn't need a table, but I still used a pouch to carry things. A few years after that, I was tired of having to carry a 20 ft rope to set a stage, so I got rid of that, but I still used a pouch. Today, the only thing I still use is a pouch. I don't need it because I can literally work from my pockets, but the pouch sets me apart enough to separate me from everyone else on the street. The most important thing you can do is literally, go out and busk. Mess up...Be awful (and I guarantee, you will be) People will walk away, you will start your shows too soon, you will speed through your shows too fast, you will forget things you've never forgotten before and after many times of trial and error, one of two things will happen: you will either get good at working a pitch or you won't. I can tell you this from experience: once you've got it, you never lose it. I am living proof. I took off a couple years from busking, for personal reasons, but as soon as I went back to the street, everything came rushing back. It's like riding a bike. I will tell you it is NOT easy money or easy work, but it is good money and fun once you get the hang of it. At the end of the day, it is hard work very hard earned money and you will be physically exhausted. If you keep at it and learn from every experience on the street, you will eventually succeed. After you've been out and lived the experience, that's when you want to go back through the books and videos. Only then will you really be able to put those teachings into perspective. |

I worked as a busking magician for 6 years and I used a messenger bag sometimes but found I did best working just out of my pockets. Space and size is the real issue as a busker you have more of a chance to set up a stage than a typical street magician so I would gather all of the gear you need for a full show, plus extra supplies and water and a tip " jar" of some sort I used a modified cigar box.

Thank you for the experience cbguy. I will defiantly agree that there isn't a substitute for actually performing, that's when you learn the most. However, I would never do anything before researching. A lot of this is for my curiosity and hopefully someone with thr same question. I think I like the idea of altering a suit like Cillini myself but still want to hear from others

Pouches have so many great uses. Far more than just putting items for the cups and balls.
I always busked with a pouch. Great for ditching, keeping props organized, keeping money, etc.

I don't have much to add. But I did ponder this myself and a lot of what I came up with was specific to me.
But something I will share is I questioned do most cup and ball workers use a pouch because it is the best thing to use or is just the go to every body dose so every one will. I hunt around in 2nd hand shops looking for deep pocket cord trousers. The ones I like hang losse and don't show bulging pockets.
Enjoy your magic,
and let others enjoy it as well! |

Hi Kyoki,
lots of good advise here,... especially, in doing the homework. My thoughts on 'pouching', though, are similar to yours. I really like Cellini's ideas on 'modified clothing'. I all honesty, though, the only modifications I ever saw him work with, was a sneaky Topit. I only saw him use pouches. I am not a pouch fan. I think one can 'entertain', with 'pouching',.. but magically fooling folks,...? hmm. ,...but. But, a couple of days ago, I was going thru some old clips I had missed, the passed winter. One,... take a looksy,.. scroll down to the Magic Café Forum where magic magazines pitch their wares. Go to Genii. They posted a film clip there intitled, "Tom Stone will fool you in this video." Watch it,... tell me what you think(!). Again, I'm not a poocher,.. but his thoughts,... aproach,. is very interesting! {p.s.: I then went into Genii and read the artikle,.. I've never seen 'pouches',.. or "pouch-workers"(!!!!!!!), that looked sööööö good!} i've got to go, i'm drooling all over the computer.... smiles, gallagher |

Hello yellowcustard, the is one of the questions I was pondering. Also, have you ever seen Cellinis modified suit. It may be something that interests you.
I didn't know you did school assemblies Mr. Oslund, that's really cool. Do you still do them or has the demand went down? You are exactly right on the research. My degree is in education and it is my love. That is where I learned you must study and do to truly learn something. Like you said a good trucker uses all the resources they have available to them Wow Gallagher that was amazing. I've been thinking more and more about using a pouch or just tailoring my clothing. That video didn't help. He was simply amazing. The level of Misdirection he achieved with that scarf was of another level. The main reason I would want to use one is to lighten my pockets and for loads. Now I need tjat issue of gennii |

I like to wear a pouch simply for "pocket management"... I perform in Las Vegas and it gets pretty hot (won't be a day under 100+ for the foreseeable future) so I don't want to wear a jacket or even a vest!!! I find that the pouch is very practical for me. Also, I'm able to keep special cards (ex. DF/DB for Anniversary Waltz) in the pouch without bending them so I'm ready to insert them secretly into the deck anytime I need them.
Probably boils down to the effects that you perform, your style and what you are comfortable with... if you're comfortable, your audience probably will be too !!! |

I bought it probably 20-25 years ago when I did mostly restaurant work... it was made for magicians, with inner pockets for card decks, pocket for thumb tip, etc. I have no idea where I purchased it, but I bought most of my magic from Hank Lee at the time. It's worn well and recently have put it back to work for street magic. |

The pouch is a good tool if you have suitable clothing with it. it came from the mediëval times. in that time it looks good. using a pouch in 2016 is not suitable. does not fit the clothing of today. audiences are not stupid. the magician puts on a big strange bag. takes out of it three cups and three little balls. at the end nobody knows where the six oranges and the coconut came from. yeah right

I think that even if people watching the routine figure out the items came from the pouch, they are puzzled even more by wondering "How could they have got from the pouch to inside/under the cup without me seeing it, even though I was watching all the time?". I found a small imitation-leather pouch with clip down flap at a Variety Store. They thread onto a belt. Each holds a deck of cards easily and can be place around the waist line wherever it suits you.
The presentation makes the magic.

I use mine for all sorts, Balloons pumps, Cards, Money. Its just like a big fanny pack. That being said if my table hid a savant I wouldn't be opposed to that method, The Pouch is just so handy it would be tough to give up
