I don't know who made them for him at the time. My johnson products expanded '64 shell fits nicely and the slot will hold back the shell if it is mouth up. However, I have a liberty walking shell from Mark Mason that is much tighter to the point where it may get stuck. I rarely use the slot box so how different shells fit has never occured to me until now. Nev

@asherfox ~ Try contacting Roy and asking about the fit. The description says the slot will fit a shell.
On his site for the box set I see a drop down menu for many different coin types and I believe they are many different sizes. Assuming you ordered the half dollar option, maybe you were sent the wrong size by mistake? |

I would like to testify that I too own a set of coin boxes that I purchased from Roy Kueppers about three years ago and they do NOT accept an expanded shell. Could have sworn he advertised them as “Roth” coin boxes, which I always assumed meant that they would accept an expanded shell, but to my great disappointment they do not. They do work otherwise and are well-made with a nice thick wall for certain moves which I will not detail here.

I hope that he just sent me the wrong boxes by accident and kind enough to replace them with an appropriate set. Below is something I copied from the site and it does mention that those boxes should fit an expanded coin shell. https://roykueppers.com/product/r-k-coin-box-set/ R.K. Coin Box Set $175.00 The R.K. Coin Box Set: was Specifically designed in Collaboration with David Roth used and sold at many of his lectures for years. Still available and unlike other coin boxes, this 4 piece set (Okito box, Boston box, Slot Box and 1-lid) is hand-machined from choice of aluminum or brass. Note that David Roth preferred the Brass and never personally used the Aluminum himself. Just one of a few boxes that has room for an Expanded shell. This is definitely a giant step in the design manufacture process of coin boxes! The Aluminum boxes will never tarnish which gives them an indefinite brilliant appearance. The Brass boxes will Tarnish if not polished regularly and most users that choose Brass like the tarnishing effect as it gives the set character. |

I felt I need to chime in on this one. I do make the Roth Boxes and have made them for about 15 years or so. David selected me to make the box set because the Boxes I was currently making were already very similar to what he wanted in a box such as thicker walls for rim steals, nicely rounded edges etc. What some don't understand is that not all Expanded shells are created equal. Meaning that the diameters vary depending on who manufactured the shell. If I were to make the inside box diameter big enough to fit all Expanded shells out there, it would not be a nice set at all. Since some Expanded shells are made quite a bit larger than others, some would be way too loose inside the box. also, if the outside diameter of the shell is that big, it makes for a bad shell because that means that the size difference between the shell and fitting coin is more obvious. And the rim thickness on the Affixed coin side of the Boston box will be thicker than the wall thickness of the opposite side and all other boxes in the set. All of these details (and more) are carefully considered when I make the boxes and therefore have the sizes and tolerances needed for the best overall fit and appearance. And the proper size shell will also fit inside the slot box as I test each box I make with one of my shells.
Having said all this I have made a note to myself to change the information on my site to mention that random Expanded shells may or may not fit the Roth set. So since this means that the RK/Roth set I make is always made to the same dimensions, It should be considered buying an Expanded shell or shell set from me at the same time, Or send me accurate dimesnions of the Sheel that's intended to be used so I can custom tweak the sizes if necessary, Or send me your shell for fitting. Hopefully this explanation helps because as you can see there is a lot more to it than some may realize. And honestly, theres still more to it;) Roy Kueppers |
