Initial review of E=MC2 (6 Cards to Pocket) by Glenn Morphew
I have recently acquired a lecture disc of Glenn’s new project. There is hopefully little or no bias in this review as I paid full price and live on the other side of the world to Glenn! What is it: This is 3 variations of a 6 signed cards to pocket routine. Glenn offers two different presentations, both of which are entertaining, but I suspect that most would want to make such a performance piece their own. Glenn goes to great lengths to credit Gary Jones from the UK as the inspiration for this project. I am a big fan of Gary’s work and use his ‘pocket to pocket’ sequence at every gig and often use variations on his repeat cards to pocket. Glenn recommends that you check out Gary’s work – I would agree. I have played with Gary’s 6 cards to pocket, but it didn’t stay with me. I have recently been working on multiple cards to pocket routines from Bill Malone and the excellent Steve Valentine project (okay, I confess, I’m a card to pocket addict!). What Glenn has done (in my opinion) is to take something which was already good and has really polished it, slowed it down and boosted clarity of effect by ensuring a steady pace which is easy to follow. This can be used as a packet trick, but can be done impromptu FASDIU. I believe that this would work well close up, at tables, as a parlour effect or perhaps even on stage (up to a point) So, to recap, this is an easy to follow, sleight of hand, 6 signed cards to pocket routine which just looks impossible! No clothing modifications are needed. Note: I understand that Glenn is re-shooting the DVD for general release and may tweak the teaching further.. What you get: A DVD, some cards (un-gaffed, but there is a good reason) and a special wet erase pen. You don’t need the pen or cards, but using them allows you to carry this as a packet trick which can be signed. Production quality: Very clear video, good audio, backdrops that are friendly on the eye and no annoying overlaid sound track! Also, you get a normal view, a close up and a performers (over the shoulder type) point of view.. What more could you ask for? Difficulty: Two versions are un-gaffed, one is mildly gaffed. They range in difficulty, but none are knuckle busters, although I wouldn’t recommend this to absolute beginners. Palming is required and there are some minor angle considerations (as with most palming), although it probably could be done surrounded with a bit of thought and minor adjustment. Teaching: Multiple sleights are taught separately in detail, so the main teaching of the routines flows smoothly. Glenn uses clear (see through) cards with normal cards when teaching the sleights so you can really see what’s going on. Multiple views are offered. I am comfortable with a few palms, but such is the quality of teaching, my Berg palm was immediately improved (perhaps I had developed bad habits over the years?). Perhaps the most notable aspect of the teaching of palming, is that Glenn teaches you palms that are executed in such a relaxed and well routined way, that every palm seems on a natural off beat or moment of relaxation and the moves really aren’t knuckle busters. Glenn’s ‘packet palm’ was new to me and an excellent tool. Each routine is taught from 3 perspectives, front view, close up front view and performers point of view. Glenn’s descriptions and verbal instruction is clear and steadily paced. Glenn has developed into one of the best teachers of sleight of hand that I have seen on digital media. He has clearly got a passion for teaching, as is evidenced by the effort put into this project. Having said that, his Three Shell Boot Camp and rub-a-dub deluxe suite are also exceptionally well taught. Constructive critique: Whenever I review something, I try to offer a constructive critique to be as objective as possible for other potential buyers and to avoid appearing to be really biased or on the payroll, however, I have very little to critique here. I suppose that there is not a John Carney level of theory or history and perhaps the over the shoulder run through could have been a touch slower (use the pause button I hear you say!), but I really am struggling to find any meaningful critique here. Oh, and if you hate palming, perhaps this is not for you (but the teaching could change your mind..!) Other resources: To name but just a few, Gary Jones has some excellent CTP effects, Carney on palming is top notch, the immense Steve Valentine CTP project has tons of work on bits of business, gags, palms, routines etc. and James Prince has a variation on the DPS in his repeat travellers which seems to work pretty much surrounded. Final thoughts: If you like what you see on the demo http://povmagician.com/product/emc%C2%B2......pockets/ you will not be disappointed. I will still be working with other CTP effects, but this is a piece that I intend to use on a regular basis, as it is readily scalable from a short-ish close up effect to an amazing stand-up parlour piece that will be easy for the audience to follow, has huge scope for personalisation and for bits of business to be added. If a sleight of hand multiple card to pocket routine which can be done virtually naked (okay – you need a pocket!) interests you, or even if you want to experience some top quality teaching, please give Glenn’s work your consideration. Thoroughly recommended. Charlie. |
